My piggy`s are always lounging about like slobs after they have stuffed themselves with carrot, cabbage etc. So I bought a large rat wheel in the hope they would start exercising.

Ha, how wrong I was - they took one look at it and went back to their piggy naps.

Has anyone got a rat wheel which is used by their piggy? :)

Ditto to above, don't think they're meant to use wheels. Mine would be too lazy anyway. ::)

Wheels or exercise balls of any kind of type are definately not suitable for guinea pigs. Fine for rats or hamsters with naturally flexible bodies, but not for piggies.
If you're concerned about your guineas getting 'slobbish' which is quite natural - guineas are meant to be chunky - then stick them in a fox/cat/dog proof run in the garden for a couple of hours, or let them run around in the house.

Thanks all readers for the above comments and advice.

Especially to Starla about Piggy's not having flexible spines. I`m not conviced but my Piggy's don't like the wheel anyway so I`ve taken it out.

They have an enormous run in the garden to which they have 24 hour access but running is not their sport. More like gentle grazing in between piggy naps. :smitten:

They are not over chunky when compared to other Piggy's I`ve seen in pictures. I thought running might take their mind off food and sloth and keep them fit at the same time.

Their run, which is in my garden, is 100% mouse proof and of fox proof - so no worries.

no prob O0 honestly, ask anyone else on the forum about pigs & flexiblity, a few months back some forum members managed to get P@H to repackage some exercise balls to ensure people didn't buy them for pigs.

they can be lazy ;D maybe try tubes or something like that, mine always enjoy running through those.

Thanx Starla - i have just put some tubes (some curved) in their run and they love them. Chasing each other around thru them its great to watch.

As they are herbivores guineapigs are 'designed' to eat as near to constantly as they can. In the same way as you see sheep grazing all day. They aren't really being 'greedy' as such, as they are herbivores they need a very large quantity of food matter to get enough nutritional value because they only eat greens. Trundling round the grass grazing constantly is what they do - if you are expecting them to exercise just for the fun of it you might be expecting something that doesn't come naturally to most guineas. ;)
