We been away. Returned and horribly shocked as 1 piggie CHLOE has gone from 1100 to 970. Course we got her to vets asap you soon forget jetlag. Vet gave her a check and found nothing wrong.
She's eatin and seems ok. We are baffled. xx

Poor Chloe - glad the vet found nothing wrong but you must be anxious about what caused the weight loss.
Hope she stabilises and regains her weight now you’re home.

Hope you had a great holiday

Sending you and Kath hugs and healing vibes to Chloe, what a shock to come home to. Hopefully she will regain some weight now you are home, good to hear the vet found nothing desperately wrong. What a worry these piggies are sometimes. Hope you both enjoyed your holdiay. X

It can be a right shock when sudden weightloss happens. She'll put it back on in no time, I suspect.

I've found whenever I'm away the pigs lose a bit of weight, likely because their daily routine is a bit upset (we feed veg and pellets twice a day, with peaflakes every time we go past the cage and sprinklings of muesli/Readigrass every day or two; the pet sitter comes once a day, they get everything at the same time with no treats).

Please switch to weighing daily at the same time (like before her dinner) and offer additional syringe feed. Since hay is making 80% of the food intake, it is impossible to tell just by sight whether a piggy is eating enough. check her poos - are they normal sized or smaller, reflecting a reduced food intake?

Mystery weight loss: has your vet checked for ovarian cysts, bloating of the stomach (but not the guts), kidneys/diabetes etc.) Sometimes it is very difficult to find out what exactly is going on. The first job is to see whether the weight loss is ongoing.

Very probably. Some Piggies do miss their slaves alot. It is likely that cos her routine was upset she didn't like it. It's good that she has started to put on weight again. Now that you are back home I'm sure she'll settle back into the usual routine just fine and regain the weight and keep it on.

Hope you both had lovely holiday!

had great time on holls Thanks. All 3 girls were a little diff but we get back in THEIR routine asap. We off work till Tue so keep eye on them.
Little worries x

I’m not looking to blame anyone here, but who looked after them while you were away? Sometimes it’s necessary to leave precise instructions for family/friends who don’t have guinea pigs in terms of what to feed them, the amount, how often, what times etc including the most important: fresh hay and water daily as a minimum. Its really good news she’s put on weight though, perhaps she missed you and is pleased you’re back

I worry about my pigs when I go away on holiday, even when I leave precise feeding instructions. I feel my piggies miss me as much as I miss them, maybe because I tend to spoil them. Hope your piggy continues to put the weight back on. xx

No one can replace yourself as looking after your pigs. I made up all their food and she bought some when needed.
She's a weird lady but heart is big with animals. We say about 80% happy with her and i agree we are to blame if our piggies who we love unconditionally . . . are not cared for 100%.
possibly a 're think next long holiday

We will do. Wiebke. She settled and we are weighing her same time as close as possible. I'm pls to say she's put on 45gms since we came home and is now 1030.
Is it possible she could have missed us and got stressed. x

It can be the stress from your absence, differences in feeding etc. But good that she is perking up again.

Just to add that we use a petsitter when we go away, and Ruby always looses a bit of weight if we are gone for more than a couple of nights.
I truly believe she pines for DD1, as the rest of the piggies (and rabbits, hamsters and bird!) are always fine.
Our petsitter is wonderful and we are very happy with her, but some piggies are more sensitive about change, and Ruby spends so much time with DD1 I think she really does miss her.
The rest don't seem to care one bit as long as they get fed!

Hi thanks for asking. Kath and I been so busy with things we really missed our "friends" on here.
Course we busy but the girls keep us level.
Cocoa mouth is horrible and we getting worried now as we exchausted on what more we can do. She's now on mild Canestes think that's it. She in herself is great eating and mixing ok.
Chloe is down weight wise now about 1015 not as low as when we came back and again she's eating and mixing ok.

I would still advise a trip to see Kim Maddock. I really think you’ll come away with a diagnosis and treatment plan for Cocoa.

it's something Kath and I are going to consider.
We really are strugglin at what to do for her. She's squeeeeks on the food time and shows little sign of discomfort. . Course if she was then we do more about it.
She's baffled 3 vets and had several test and treatment and still this bloody lip is no better.
She's hates being away from the girls Heidi and Chloe and is a bad traveller. I'm of course bias but she's a stunner and I'd love to show her but can't as she stresses.
This piggie has been through so much in her life and we gave them a forever home and I can't keep subjecting her to upset.
But I think it's getting time to really consider a specialist and hope Cocoa forgives me. xx

Glad Chloe is putting on weight. I agree with seeing Simon about Cocoa, can't do any harm either way x
