I’ve had my guineapig for about a year and got her from a previous owner which told us she is about 1 year old. She has been living with her other companion outside up until today as yesterday I noticed she sounded like she was wheezing a bit and thought it may have be a cold like thing where it would be cured by just heat and extra care. I’ve looked into it a lot more now to find they need antibiotics if it is a URI. I’ve bought her inside today and she’s carried on resting on her heating pad but I can still hear her having random episodes of wheezing. She’s been eating normally, drinking the same and is still as active as she was before yet my mum is saying it’s nothing to be worried about. I’ve looked up the symptoms of URI and freaked myself out about it and wanted to take her to the vets ASAP but my mum is not taking them until tomorrow. She has no visible mucus around her eyes or nose and I’m hoping she is right that it will be ok and that maybe she will just have some hay congestion or something that will pass through but I’ve worked myself up so much about it that any answers will be appreciated. Thanks

Only a vet is able to give you a diagnosis. It might just be hay dust irritating the airways, but you must always have any breathing issue checked out given the severity of a URI. A URI is bacterial (piggies don’t get viral colds) and does need antibiotics to treat it.

Have you moved her companion indoors with her as well?

Thank you for replying, I’ll be taking her to the vet tomorrow but worried about leaving her over night. Yes I’ve bought the companion inside too as we only have 1 inside cage and I’m scared of stressing her out being by herself.

You’ve done the right thing, bonded piggies shouldnt be separated.

Keep a check on her weight - when you suspect an illness, you switch from the routine weekly weighing to daily weighing so you can ensure there is no reduction in hay intake. If she does lose weight due to being poorly, then step in with syringe feeding.

Ok fab that’s reassuring to hear, I’ve just weighed her and she seems normal from that :)) do you know if there is anything I should do during the night to help her if it is a URI. Her heating pad is on and she is sat comfortably on it and I’ve been giving them leafy greens but just wondering if there is anything I can do to soothe her breathing
