So this happened a few years ago but as I'm new to this thread I just thought I'd ask your opinions. I used to have three cats when I lived at home, Midnight, Buffy and Jack. Buffy was a beautiful long hair ginger and white cat. He had health problems from the get go. Nothing as bad as the rest of his litter though. They all died much earlier than him. Anyway, every year he would have to go to the vet to get hormone injections. He would pant a lit and lay about the house so we new when he needed it. He went for his injections as per usual this one year. A few hours later my dad went to collect him and came back with a bin bag in his hand. He said they had put him to sleep. I genuinely didn't believe him till I looked in the bag, but I should have known by the look on his face. We had had Buffy six years. I never cried so much over an animal. My question is, was it ethical of them to put him down without at least consulting the family first, or at least calling us after instead of leaving it till my poor dad went to collect him. Thanks guys

i would believe this is unethical without informed consent from the owner, unless it was an emergency, still should ring.I'm sorry you lost your cat to such circumstances.:hug:s.

Thank you. :hug:it's bothered me for years as I just felt it was wrong. He seemed no more off than he usually would each year. He was a lot of work but he was my baby before I had my actual human baby!

it is awful really, that you were not consulted, what a shock.i would think in todays time, you would have reasonable grounds to complain, and suggest it is misconduct.if it happened now.x

We never went back to that vet after with any of our animals. I suppose my parents should have pushed it further as I had just had my daughter so wasn't in the right headspace. I remember sitting crying after I found out and my little baby was just lying in my arms staring at me! I think if it happened now I'd probably punch the vet haha. Maybe not quite, but I'd absolutely make a complaint. He didn't deserve to be on his own when he went

Wow, I would be reporting the vet, that is not right at all. They have no right to do anything to your animal without your consent.
