Hello! I'm upgrading my guinea pig cage to a c&c cage this week and I'm thinking about building a loft area for them. Anyway, I need some general guidelines on how to construct a ramp. I have minimal DIY skills (don't have access to a saw, nail gun etc) . I do have a hot glue gun though (would a little bit of glue be safe around piggies, if well concealed under fleece or something?) . Also, how steep can the ramp be. One of my piggies should have no bother as she is very young and active. The other one though is my big, lazy four year old boar. I'm sightly worried he wouldn't manage a ramp because like I said he's four and has never walked up a slope in his life! Also, what materials do you recommend both for the main body of the ramp and for the grippy surface. Is it essential that the ramp has sides, i.e has anyone experienced their guinea pig falling off a ramp because it doesn't have walls. Should the ramp has rungs/steps or can most piggies manage without? If it does need steps, what do you make them out of? sorry for asking so many questions but I have absolutely zero experience in this area and would welcome any advice! I'd love to see picture of ramps that people have made. Thank you xx

It really does need to have sides. Guinea pigs are ground roaming and aren’t natural climbers, being scared of heights, it means that without sides, not only is there the risk of a fall, but also the risk that they will simply be too scared to use it.

It needs to be as shallow as possible - again, not being climbers, too steep and they won’t use it.

Anything you cover it with needs to be washable ie don’t make any fastenings permanent with glue etc. I’ve seen people use Velcro to hold covers to ramps.
