Hi
Does anyone have any tips on ramps in double decker hutches? How to encourage guineas to use them, what angle, what to cover them with and whether the ramp tubes work? Many thanks
* Make sure its not too high (the angle of the ramp) if it is to steep slide a piggie house or carboard box underneath to make it less steep and easier to climb up/down.
* Put fleece/old materiel (not silk) /cut up old jeans on the ramp so there is something to grip onto.
* Put veggies/ porriage oats on the ramp so they can venture up and down it.
* Another tip is to gentle place your hand on the piggies backside as he sits on the ramp, gently push him up the ramp so he runs up and do the same again for going down.
* You can buy ramp tunnels from....a website that i cant remember the name of....which act as a safe and secure tunnel to access the bottom and top layer.
Hi
thanks for tips. I have found the ramp tunnels on cosy cavies web site, they look like a good idea.
I am not sure what you mean by putting a box under the ramp, do you have any pics?
Useful info, so much appreciated
I make my own version of the twig type hides and have made 2 ramps out of them. The first covered the existing ramp in their 2 level hutch. The second was to get onto the roof of one of the sleeping compartments. I just cut a piece of plywood for the ramp and covered it with twigs with wire through them.
I have made our ramp less shallow too but placing on top of a wooden hidey. I don't have a pic, but this is how it lifts it (it's obviously not to scale and a really basic drawing, but hopefully you'll know what I mean )
It opens up the floor space a bit too and gives them somewhere else to play/hide.
They can all jump up onto the box and often snooze on top of it, as well as inside it You could make another ramp, I did have one when Marmite was little, but she soon learnt how to jump up and never really used it so I took it out. The box is only about 20cm or so tall
I made my own ramp as my second hand hutch was missing its ramp so I made it as shallow as possible and then I got a tunnel for the ramp purpose built from http://www.cosycavies.co.uk/ it is absolutely fab and the lady that makes them is lovely.
As regards to training them, I was lucky and my rescued male taught the girls to go down it - I put them in the bottom and they would go up perfectly well, just not down it till he moved in and they run up and down it now.
