Hi guys, anyone got any tips on making a ramp for my 2nd/mezzanine floor in my new C&C cage?

I've tried making a wooden one (no sides, with sisal matting glued onto it), and placed at a shallow angle. But Dandelion just bypasses it, even when I put his favourite treat of cucumber all the way up it.

When I gently place him on the ramp, he splays his legs out and looks petrified rolleyes

Any ideas on how to train him to use a ramp?!?!

Maybe putting sides on it might help or some people run fleecy tunnels down theirs I think. Sounds like it will have good grip with the matting on it. I guess you could try leaving a trail of favourite food on it ?

Anyone remember the website for the fleecy ramp tunnels ?

My ramp is a piece of roof guttering with carpet tiles glued to the bottom to give grip. My 2 pigs run up and down it all day long. There's no fear of them falling off as the ramp has sides. ;)

Ours is wooden with fleece stappled underneath and we put correx side on it. Fudge is so nosey she was the first up and down it. Truffle took a few days but they both use it no problem now we did line pieces of cucumber along it to start with.

I put my wooden ramp (with sides and carpet tiles on the bottom) on the floor of the cage to start with, because no matter what I did, 2 refused to use it. After a week of getting used to it laying on the floor (I also added a fleece cover, plus feeding their veggies on it) they were running along it quite happily.

Then I just put it in position and hey presto - piggies running up and down no problem at all.

Just one thing to note. I couldn't understand why the pee smell was always there, even after a full cage clean. The tinkers pee on the ramp rolleyes so be prepared to change the cover at times :) I think that carpet tiles are best - they are cheap and can be cut easily to fit and the piggies get good purchase for running up and down. The sides on their ramps are just 2" wood and it works very well.

My Piggies wouldn't use the ramps untill I put some carpet on them and most importantly some sides so that they felt secure when on them.

I have some pics of my cage on the Members Gallery/ homemade cages section, ( go to guinea pig care, then housing, and the gallery is in the top section). At the moment the pics of the cage are on page 12 and description of how i did the ramp are on page 13.

Hope they help :)

Thanks Woo

that is such a great idea, unfortunately I don't have any more grids otherwise I would have made a ramp out of some.

will get my thinking cap on!

How do you secure your ramps to the second tier?

Thanks

I use three cup hooks screwed into the end of the ramp to hook over the grid edge. The picture below is from a different job but shows you the idea of it and the second picture shows you how to easily open up the cup hook if it is too tight(?)

If you have some of the mesh type c+c, you can bend it into a * shape and fix two of them together, that is what I use as my ramp, cover with fleece or vetbed too.

Thanks everyone for your great ideas. The company/lady who makes the fleecy ramp tunnels is Helen, from CosyCavies.co.uk.

I'm going to buy one from her, as my sewing machine is at Mum's (and I'm too busy to make one right now anyway!)

Will post a photo when it's all done!
