Hi there,
this is my first time here so Hi everyone. I'm 14 and i was just wondering if i should put a banister/railing in my outdoor guinea pig hutch. its the bluebell cottage from pets at home and currently we have two bigger boys and two smaller ones. the smaller ones have a tendency to fall down the stars. just today Donny took a topple while eating his cabbage which nearly gave me a heart attack. If I should put a railing/ banister, how do you recommend making it?

Thank you so much,
Nansi X

Hello and welcome to the forum! A few members on here have the bluebell and have added a banister using wood. It's always good to make it as safe as possible. I have had a bluebell before. I made a bannister for the landing using a 2x2 inch beam and also carpeted the ramp so that it wasn't slippy :)

Thank you. I especially like the idea of carpeting the staircase. whenever they run up it make this loud scraping sound. I will definetly look into the beam idea.
Thanks again x

Not a problem :) You can get carpet tiles or cheap doormats to cut to size for the ramp, gives them lots of added grip :)

Good idea to add the bannister! I found the ramp is a bit slippy so the carpeted ramps makes it a lot more stable :D

we added a banister to our hutch as i was worried about the drop ! just a small piece of wood tacked onto the side did the job just fine..

I used one of the green tunnels on my ramp. It filled the hole and made it easier for them to get up and down x

I have carpeted the ramp but haven't added a bannister. Both my boys have fallen down the hole on one occasion each (one pushed the other both times). They haven't repeated it.

While you are waiting to get sorted I would feed them downstairs then you won't have the problem of them not paying attention because they are distracted by food!

Thanks, thats a great idea. thats what my mum tends to do!

Ramp tunnels also work. They help grip and also they can't fall off the edge. I get mine from Etsy and they Velcro on and off for cleaning.

Agreed a ramp tunnel or a railing is best. A piggie can easily get hurt by falling down a ramp as they are so small.
Deff agree with feeding downstairs - may help avoid any nasty accidents.
:) x
