is one layer of towel under a layer of fleece good enough to soak up areas where my piggies pee alot and protect the corex under it all?

That's a 20 million dollar question ! I am sure a lot of people just use one layer of toweling . Are you happy to check when you spot clean to see if it is working ?

i will be checking. I'm going to cut up the towelling so that i can clean this whenever its soiled as i hate having a smelly room!
do you know if old bed sheets are ok as a temporary substitute for fleece? ive ordered some but i want to get rid of the wood shavings as soon as possible.

I don't worry too much about my correx, I see that as being the protection to the floor! Am I missing something here? I use a mattress protector though rather than a towel. Others use them successfully though.

I have 2 layers of towels in the whole cage and then a third layer in areas thy pee the most, like by their hay rack, bowl and water bottle.
I want the floor to be soft for them, that's why I use 2 layers but I also find that the fleece doesn't work as well when there's only one layer of towels, it stays wet.
They also have fleece and towel pads in their houses so I guess it counts as a 4th layer. They pee in their houses the most so I like having something I can change easily in them. :)

I make the pads by folding a medium sized towel in half and then wrapping it in a spare fleece blanket. I usually use the small, cheap dog/cat ones.

No the sheets won't work. The fleece allows the wetness to pass through and be dry almost immediately so that they aren't paddling about in wet. Bed sheets would just get soggy.

I use two layers of towels underneath and two layers of fleece on top and it works perfect for me
I spot clean though out the day and change twice a week unless it's particularly wet then I'll change when needed

fleece wicks urine away - bed sheets don't do that . I would keep using your shavings until your fleece arrives.
