ok i currently have a brown guinea pig that looks a lot like a squirrel, so Squirrel is its name haha. i plan on getting a second one right after we move, but i dont know how i should introduce them. the cage ill be buying(before i get the second guinea pig) is 47in long and 24in wide. i plan on fleece with towels and then newspaper as a substrate. I'm also wondering what the best hideing things are? right now I'm using cardboard tubes but theyre almost all eatin up. also where's the best place to buy a guinea pig? i really want a long haired one.

Hello and welcome to the forum. There are a few things that would help people to know before your questions can be answered. Is Squirrel a boar or sow? Where do you live? The best place to find a guinea pig is in a rescue were there are so many in urgent need of a good home. You can be sure they will be healthy and not pregnant that way. I really recommend getting a c and c cage as that will ensure your guinea pigs have all the space they need. I wish I was told about them when I first got guinea pigs. You can buy grids and make them the size you want.

I bought wooden cabins for my guinea pigs and tunnels for them to hide in. The hay experts has lovely tunnels and zooplus has some nice cabins. You can also get them on Amazon.

Please feel free to ask any questions on here.

would large PVC pipes work? she really likes the tubes but i want something she cant eat as fast.

Do you have a boy or girl?

The cage your describing is the 120cm indoor cage, its ok for two guinea pigs, but not really anymore. Best things to buy for them is wooden archyway/houses and logs to chew on as well as plastic iglus. You can also buy them cosey's and snugs for them which piggies love.

Please consider rescuing a piggie rather than buying one. There are hundreds of unwanted piggies in rescue that need a good home including long haired. I would suggest only getting a long haired if you are absolutly sure and 100%. They need daily grooming and more attention in that respect so dont just jump into wanting a longhaired straight away. Although no reason why you shouldnt either.

Finally, welcome to the forum, i hope you find all you need on here.

Forgot to add, where is your location? We might be able to point you in the right direction of a good rescue.

I do not know if that cage is any good as the review said it was flimsy but it is up to you. Your guinea pig really needs a friend as soon as possible as she will be very lonely. Are there any rescues where you live? She may chew the PVC. Are there no web sites which deliver to America which have wooden cabins and tunnels?

Abbys, i find do moult a little more than the smooth haired piggies i brush both mine daily :)

what kind of brush do you use? also would this be a good thing since my guinea pig likes tunnels and blankets?

I use a soft bristle brush i'll find you one on zooplus one moment :)

And those tunnels are good, however if your piggies wee and poo in them they can get smelly/ stained quickly. So will need a good clean once a month. :)

EDIT: This is the brush i have :) http://www.petsathome.com/shop/bristle-brush-by-options-15830

oh and could i build wooden guinea pig houses? and what would be the best wood?

Thanks okay! :) Just wanted to point it out so the OP doesn't buy it.
It's got good reviews too. Don't know what those people are thinking!

where all can i adopt a guinea pig and how much does it usually cost? i looked on petfinder and didnt find any close enough to me. i also just contacted a shelter but i dont think they do things like guinea pigs. i also looked on craigslist and didnt see any. i guess i can keep looking on petfinder since ill need to wait until i get the new cage so i can quarentine with the current one.

i think i want to make my own c&c cage now. how many of these will i need?

i want to make a 2x5 but i might make a 2x4

You'll only need one box if you put the cage on the floor.

Don't get grids from Target. The spacing are too wide and guinea pigs can get their head stuck. Look for storage grids that have 9x9 spacing across each grid.

Do you have a Kmart, Walmart, Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond near you?

Did you find any coroplast yet? There's a plastic warehouse with location all over US.

You can also call sign stores in your area.

See how to make the cage here:

ill get the cubes from kmart, but is there something you can use in place of chloroplast just in case i cant find it? also how big of a cage could i make with the 6 cubes so i know how much chloroplast to get? and would the 47x24x12 be ok for 2? id like to give them as big as possible but ill have to see if i can find the chloroplast.

The general minimum for 2 piggies, is 2 grids by 4 grids, meaning you need 12 grids in total.

how many grids are there with the 6 cube ones at kmart? I'm guessing around 12 or more?

could i make a cage 60 inches long, 30 inches wide, and 14 inches tall with the 6 cube? ill probably add a top level eventually.

I would think 12 or more, but hopefully someone will come along and let you know because it doesnt open to a product link for me. :)

You can use a tarpaulin or linoleum instead of coroplast, just put it down put the newspaper, towels and fleece on top and then stand the pen on top of it all. Make sure that it goes right under the sides of the cage though or they'll pull up all the layers and try and get underneath. rolleyes You'll may find that hay/poop/bedding will fall out of the cage more easily though.
