I have just got the summer lodge a double 5ft hutch for my sows, it has a ramp so I was wondering how I can intice them to use the ramp and also how can I make it slighly less steep?

also I'd like to get a cover for it any recommendations that would fit it? I has the bedroom door on the left side:))

Can you post a picture at all?

Line the ramp with carpet or fleece to help your piggies grip it better.
The ramp on my double hutch is quite steep, but since I lined it with fleece they have not had any problems going up or down it :).

I was thinking of wedging it up with something, but the ramp unless it is locked under the strip at the bottom it comes away at the top so I'm not sure if that would work with the ramp but I could try it:)

there was a pic on here of someone who had a fleece tunnel made for the ramp. maybe something like that would be a good idea? :)

yes, I think they may use it if I had a tunnel, I can't remember who makes ramp tunnels?/

I bought a box with double house under it and put that under the ramp to decrease the steepness of it and then they come down onto a platform and use a log roll to go down from that and under into the two arched houses. Sounds a bit complicated have a look at my posting showing the two posh houses I got from ebay it will make more sense.

I raised the ramp in our old hutch too and they seemed to much prefer it. Plus it gives them somewhere else to hide ;)

I don't have an actual photo I don't think, but kinda like this... (excuse the poor drawing in paint!)

That's good, did they have any trouble climbing up the side of the house? mine are a bit lazy lol!

Nope. They all sussed it straight away. Even Marmite managed it, as she was only really little when I did it.

I did put some fiddlesticks up one side to help her up but she ignored them comletely and just jumped up! rolleyes

you have some clever piggies, I have a plump peruvian and I can't see her wanting to jump up anywhere! bless her:p

I have the same hutch, well, erm, three of them actually! But two we have split into two separate floors.

I have attached my ramp with a hinge so it is still attached but can be made less steep. I am not sure if I will just extend it or put something under it, probably the latter and then add a ramp to this for them to get down from.

We used a sheet of plastic to make a wall to the ramp and also around the hole in case they fell down it!

I am on the lookout for a cover too, I think there may be a scratch and newton that fits it but need to double check the measurements, if I find it I will post it.

thanks, the hinge idea is good:))

yes, I was worried about the gap at the top, too, might try the plastic idea.

One of my sows is using the ramp now, but the rest are to scared:(

A man on e bay makes hutch covers to measure, thats how I'm getting mine, you could try him I'll try to find the link

I put a plastic tunnel on my ramp, you can get green expandable ones, big ones for buns and smaller one for piggies, once I attached this even my older sows used it, the young ones used the ramp but the older ones got stuck on one level!

I tried to make my ramp less steep, but the hole isn't big enough - when I make the ramp less steep it's too close to the upstairs floor and they can't fit onto the ramp.. Does that make sense? Hope so!

I purchased the summer lodge at the weekend and its like a mansion for my 2pigs(patch and squeak) compared to what they had before, everything was fine but they would not use the ramp, so i came on here for help, and lining the ramp with carpet has worked a treat, they are up and down all the time now, they would not even come down for food before i did this, so i was slightly worried.
i have now got to very happy pigs, thanks for the advice.:))

Hi

I have a double hutch with a ramp that is fairly steep. I've had my two boys in here since they were babies and never had any problems. They run up and down like whippets!

I bought a ramp tunnel from cosy cavies (they are superb) and put this on here when they were little. It offers them a bit more grip and also because it has sides they don't feel quite so scared going up and down and it prevents them toppling off.

I found that as soon as the ramp tunnel was in they started going up and down.

I have now taken it out as they took to sleeping in there and it was impossible to get them out the hutch rolleyes

Certainly worth looking into - cosy cavies is on the internet

x
