My family and I recently got a girl guinea pig yesterday but she is very scared, shy, and doesn’t rlly enjoy when we watch her. And spends most of time in her hideout. Is this normal behavior?

This behavior sounds pretty normal since she’s new to the environment she probally comes out when your sleeping and or it’s very quiet, as long as she’s eating she should be okay. However, I do have one concern, does she have a cage mate? Guinea pigs are herd animals and unless she’s aggressive or has a reason to be alone there should always be a buddy! They make each other feel safe!

Oh ok thank you and yes she has been eating, I think she’s just trying to adjust to us and her new home. And yes she does have a cage mate. Her name is Hazel and she loves to come out and play with her chew toys.

Hi!

Please get her a same sex companion asap. Guinea pig are group animals and not wired to be on their own. She is feeling very, very lost and very alone without the protection of her family and friends. Keep in mind that pet shop piggies come from a commercial mass breeder and haven't had anything in the way of human contact.
Companionship is by far the best and most loving gift you can ever make her,
Companionship

It ranges from welfare compatible cage sizes, bedding; a good long term diet (can add 1-2 years to your guinea pig's life!), daily care; understanding behaviour; health monitoring and spotting illness early on; what to do in and emergency and saving up for vet care or where to get support from etc...

Please give your new girl time to settle in. I’d say at least 5 days. Cover part of the cage so she can feel secure. She will come out her shell in her own time.

Did you get her from a rescue? Please also add your location (country is enough). And:wel:

That is great. Just place a towel over the cage and leave them to it. They will come out when nobody is in the room and they feel safe.
Use our piggy whispering tips to tell them in their own body language that you want to make friends with them, want them to become members of your group and that you love them once they start coming out.
