Long story short: my beloved piggie, Moby, is suffering from what seems to be a tooth root abscess. He has started treatment with antibiotics and has also been described Meloxicam as he's in a lot of pain.

The dosage that is being given to Moby is 0.2 mg Meloxicam twice a day. Moby weights 875 gram.

It's the 'cat version of Meloxicam 0.5mg/ml. (I'll enclose a photo of the bottle). However, the dosage seems very low to me and doesn't seem to help much with the pain.
Can anyone tell me if it's the correct dosage? Last year, another piggie of mine was given Meloxicam (by a different vet) and if I remember correctly then the dosage was quite a lot higher... I hope anyone out there can share any experience/advice.

Thank you in advance oxox

Hello. I’m so sorry Moby has a tooth root abscess. I have had a piggy with this. Here is his story if it can be of any help to you.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

I agree with you that the dose of cat loxicom is very low. My vet prescribes the dog version. Would your vet consider prescribing the dog version?

Also a very good antibiotic for abscesses is Zithromax. It did cause my Pepper to stop eating while he was on the six week course though.

Pepper’s abscess was very big (4cm). He had an operation to drain it and it was stitched open so it could continue to drain. Is this an option for Moby?

Good luck I hope Moby is soon feeling better. ❤️

@weepweeps Thank you for your kind reply- I will go read Peppers story in a moment oxox
My regular vet is off on vacation for a while, so I have had to go see someone else regarding my poor piggie boy. I did mention to the vet that the dosage seemed low- and the vet then checked with a different vet at the clinic to make sure the dosage was correct. But yea, I was told that 0.2 mg/twice a day was the correct dosage... it's quite frustrating as Moby seems to be in pain, so the Meloxicam is obviously not working properly.

The plan is apparently to first do the treatment with antibiotics- and then next week (when he's hopefully better), put him under anesthetic to see what's going on regarding the tooth root abscess (vet thinks it's a tooth root abscess- but not 100% certain).

Sometimes being a pet owner really is the most stressful thing! :( :( :( :( :(

It definitely is stressful when they are poorly.

Are you weighing him daily to make sure he’s not losing too much weight. Pepper lost 400g in total. If Moby is in pain then he won’t want to eat.

@weepweeps Thank you. It really is the most stressful thing when our beloved pets are unwell- I hate it :(

I noticed that your piggie, Pepper, was given Baytril as AB? The vet gave Moby Exoflox to fight the infection... is Exoflox the right AB to give in a case like this? Do you happen to know?

Moby has lost weight too- but his weight has been stable for 3 days now. He is not eating by himself and I'm syringe feeding him throughout the day.

Exoflox is baytril. Enrofloxacin is the active ingredient in baytril and exoflox. They are all the same thing just different brand names.

It’s the most commonly prescribed antibiotic but whether it is the right thing in this case is for your vet to determine. It isn’t necessarily the best antibiotic for abscesses - Azithromycin is a very good one but it is also very strong.

I’m sorry to hear your boy is unwell

The Baytril didn’t work so he was then put on a 6 week course of Zithromax (Azithromycin?)

Syringe feeding is hard work long term. Do you have someone to help you?

@weepweeps Thank you for sharing the information about Zithromax. I will do some research and talk to the vet about it. I'm still syringe feeding Moby- as he's still not eating. It's almost a full-time job to syringe feed a sick pig, but thankfully i WFH. His weight is stable, but I'm obviously worried sick.

Thank you again for your reply ox

It’s good his weight is stable. I hope your vet can up his pain meds. Sending healing vibes to Moby and hugs to you ❤️
