Hello
I have a young female who has an elongated root that seems to be pressing her eye a bit, even if medicine seems to make the swelling go down.

The vet wants to pull out her tooth, she was supposed to have her teeth trimmed monday but they didnt, I was hoping that and some antibiotics in the first place would happen before something so invasive.

Does anyone have experience of what is the right course of action, the piggy acts normal, eats, isnt bothered when she has pain meds, I am sure having gotten her teeth trimmed like first planned, would have helped her eat by herself, which she mostly does.
I want to suggest something less invasive first, because I am scared of what they want to do, especially as seeing as they are not used to guinea pigs, there are none around me sadly, but they have trimmed teeth before on other pigs.

Thank you.

I think one thing to note is if the one upper tooth is removed, the lower one will possibly overgrow as it will have nothing to wear down against.
My bunny has elongated roots in the lower and upper jaw. She hasn't had any teeth removed and manages well on pain relief, she has a limited diet as some things she struggles to chew but otherwise is doing OK!
Sometimes however I have to wipe her eyes, particarly the right one as her tear ducts are partially blocked by the roots.
She is however also prone to tooth root and jaw abscesses which may be something to look out for.

Is the vet sure it's an elongated root? An xray could be helpful in assessing the teeth and any possible damage to the jawbone.

Best of luck! 🤞❤️

That is what I was thinking, it seems so invasive, they took an xray, which they have not shown me actually, and said it is, and that is what is making her eye bulge a bit, even if with meds it seems it has become so much better, would much prefer trying antibiotics first if its just inflamed. They didnt mention any damage to the jaw.
Thank you very much
