I'm thinking about creating a larger cage for my pig Meg when she gets a friend (current one is 5 x 2.5 feet). I've got loads of C&C grids and connectors. But there are a couple of things I'm confused about and can't find any answers too.

Firstly, how do you get your piggies out of a big cage/clean the middle? Before I took the sides/top off my current cage, I couldn't lean over far enough to get my piggy out when she sat against the back wall (combination of being short, fat and having joint problems!). So how do you reach into a really wide cage? I'd love to have a cage around 6*4 grids but I don't see how I'd be able to get Meg out of it when its cleaning time (she always runs away!) What do you guys do? The obvious solution would be to get inside the cage and pick her up, but people usually use Correx and I've heard that crushes easily when humans stand on it.

That brings me to my other problem: how do you keep the cages off the ground when they are really big? I've been told you shouldn't leave them directly on the floor as they can get super cold in winter (I have concrete floors!). But I can't exactly imagine finding a low table that size, and even if I made something, again, how would I be able to reach in enough to grab my piggy if she sat at the back/in the middle?

Thanks!

My piggies always run when I try to get them out so I use a pyramid cat bed now with a bed inside and once I’ve took the loft out and they’re darting about to hide I use it and say in an excited voice ‘come on blackie’ etc and they jump in.As soon as they get in I say good girl so now they associate it with floor time and when I get them back in, a clean cage.

My 5 x 3 is on the floor. I kneel in it to clean. My piggies are trained to climb into the pet carrier to be moved. When the carrier appears in the cage it means food, either grass in the garden run or treats in the indoor one. When they go back in the cage it's nugget and fresh hay time. The piggies in the ground floor cage also have an opening in the side for floor time when they can go in and out as they please.

One grid is held together with bull dog clips so it can be removed, the corex flap is held down with their bowl, when its put back up it's the corex is held together with a file binder which the corex is topped with to stop it getting chewed all the way round the cage.

Ditto :))

If you have enough grids you could build one layer of grids under the cage to get it off the floor, of course then it wouldn’t be sturdy enough for you to climb in if it’s too wide to reach. This was my old cage set up in my daughter’s room, then you can use the underneath part for storage.5F88E4FB-66E6-449F-A8C1-7E42D56D8427.webp

Could you use grids to put it off the ground and leave room to maneuvre around it? So not against a wall or in a corner? I clean the cage while the boys are in there. Sometimes they’ll be in the loft as I clean downstairs, or more often than not, they stand in the back corner then move (and pee and poo 🙄) when I get to where they are

Oh wow, thanks for all the advice guys! =D

If Correx is strong enough to stand on, that should work fine. Otherwise I'd have to find a way to try and put a massive cage in the middle of my tiny living room in my little flat! I have enough C&C grids to build a piggy amusement park but they are kept indoors so by the sound on it, the correx should be enough to keep them warm. I was just worried I'd crush it standing on it, hah.

Meg says thank you too!

I have a large c and c set up on a few ikea tables and use dog lead clips to hold the front grids shut and just take them off for cleaning.
