I've posted a lot about Queso and a little about our piggy, Salsa. More recently, we also adopted Huevos. After some squabbling that did actually land Salsa in the ER (cut on his face). They all finally settled into to their new lives as our Ranchos Huevos Herd (or as we affectionately call them, our Nerd Herd). Some of you may remember that we're Texans, so we felt that a Texican name was appropriate for our piglets. Sadly, with Queso's recent diagnoses he has been retired to inhabit the other half of the 7 ft cage. However, they are still happy together, sniffing through the bars and chattering their teeth if one side gets fed first. Here's my babies:

Megapig! THE TRIFECTA! This was how we put them when we were changing out their cage liner and needed to get to the laundry room. Their floor time area is in front of the laundry room door, so they were only in the basket for 5 mins.

It is hard to see because of pictures and the light, but our Huevos actually has BLUE eyes! We didn't notice until a few weeks ago.

This was for Queso's birthday. Do not be alarmed by the sombrero! It was gently placed on his head for only a few seconds to take the picture and he was not bothered by it at all. There are no clips or glue involved. Also, he shared his "cake" with his herd.

Salsa's injury, we stayed up all night at the ER vet. Thank god we have an ER vet who has an exotic vet on call 24/7. We do not think the injury was malicious, but an accident from a stray claw when they were rough housing. Salsa got babied for a few weeks and then went back to his typically bossy ways.

Queso napping. We often have butcher paper for him. It's literally the only thing he plays with. But, he loves to throw it in the air! This old pig is still young at heart! <3

This is Huevos on the day we adopted him, which was on Easter! If you don't know, Huevos means Eggs in Spanish (it also means testicles, when we found that out it was too late... but we still giggle.)

7 ft. piggy crib! It's now split in half for them and we're about to get a "balcony" for Salsa and Huevos.

Videos that are so stinking cute:

Actually featured on Staybowl's Instagram after they saw it. Salsa was demonstrating how mischievous he is by trying to flip a Staybowl as soon as we put it in his cage for the first time:

I trained my piggies that whistle = food:

Singing happy birthday to Queso:

Queso enjoying eating his candles:

Huevos' giant elf ears about to make him fly off like Dumbo when I whistle:

How Huevos responds to whistles in his crib:

Queso guzzling his meds (I am not forcing the syringe at him, it's literally all him moving it)

Queso and Salsa when they got their new crib (7 min video):

Piggy showdown when strawberries are given to them for the first time:

Oh what sweeties. I love the wonderful paisley fleece. Wish we could get exciting fleece like that over here.

So many beautiful piggies on this thread to mention. I need to wipe up all the

very very beautiful piggies! I will copy your piggie cake for sure one day! and a piggie who gives kisses is so cute!
looking at the long video with Queso I see that he moves his back side while walking in the same way of the obese dog of my (obese) neighbours. They have a nice dachshund, in italian "bassotto"... hence his name is "Otto"! Now Otto is (finally) on a strict diet, already lost weight and today I saw him walking on the road... when until some weeks ago he did not walk at all. I though it was for the consequences of a stroke or something else. I was wrong, Otto has "only" arthritis, he is now under glucosamine, vitamins and other medicines, but he must lose weight. They have changed the vet and this new one is very strict. I couldn't help thinking of your piggie and now I am sure you also will get the same good results. (Otto had not walked for many years; his belly touched the floor...)

OMG! He really does! I want to steal your baby now! Hahaha XD I'm so jealous you guys have such good weather for them to be outside! Lucky piggies!

@rome_italy We have always thought Queso was severely obese. The vet suggested we put him on a diet at first and we have restricted his pellets and food. However, when we went back to the vet she said he's actually a totally normal weight. We were so baffled because he LOOKS so fat. The only thing I can think of is that he has bone spurs on his hips, which cause him to not be able to carry it well. Plus, he has no muscle at all and his little fat rolls spill over. He's only a LITTLE bigger than my other two pigs who are very fit and fast runners. The vet even said she doesn't think he needs a diet, because his weight was healthy (1290 g). But, right now we can't reduce his food anymore because we actually have to keep an eye on him for dramatic weight loss to rule cancer out once and for all.

the fact is that charts and those strange numbers of "normal weight" are wrong and I am referring of humans, too. My 2^ daughter, according to those charts and her Science book at school was "severy underweight" (159cm and 43 kg) but actually she was and is perfect, her menses are regular, she does sport, has energy, her blood tests are perfect, her muscle mass is good... Me? 160cm and 48kg. Underweight again. But I am not, I have fat deposits and some cellulite, too. With this "underweight" body I had two babies without any trouble and they were even big at the birth. Little babies' charts are a nightmare. My daughters were oversize... I had to bear the sermons of the doctors although I have never fed my daughters with junk food/sugars/pizza; now they are underweight! and when my first daughter suddendly gained 8kg and I took her to the endocrinologist, the doctor said that she was absolutely normal about the charts!... but I did not listen. I went on with my idea that there was something wrong for sure and in fact I was right... (long story then solved only thanks to me and my being stubborn).
Piggies' charts are wrong in my opinion and in the opinion of some vets, especially when you follow the old charts. There is a vet in USA, I forgot his name... he also gets angry when a pig weighs more than 1000g. There are also online researches which demonstrate that an "underweight" pig lives longer than a "normal weight" one. The same experiment was due with the monkeys and now also with the humans (Dr. Valter Longo, italian researcher in USA http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/02/five-day-fasting-diet-could-fight-disease-slow-aging).
I have been working for more than 20 years with people overweight affected by troubles at their joints; the ones, even the ones severely affected, who are able to lose weight following a diet based on vegs and healthy/anti-inflammatory foods (even when they are considered "normal size") and reach the limit of the underweight, totally recover or dramatically improve (and get rid of cortison drugs). This is a fact.
Anyway, let's thank the pellets firms and their business for all these bad consequences on pets'health... last time my vet laughing told me "show me a fat piggie or a fat cat who has been pellets free since the birth and I will offer you a dinner". But only with me he talks like that... he says that owners are pellets/treats-dependent and want to cuddle a fluffy pet; isn't he right?
Cheese Mommy, I am sure that things will change in better with your awasome Queso, no matter which disease he actually has got. He is active, not lazy, he looks like a happy pig and has you and Dad at his side.
(There might even be some hormonal/inner imbalance which causes in him a great and excessive hunger... who knows? but a piggie is like a child: he cannot go to the supermarket... their diet depends on us only)
