a few weeks ago my 4 year old boar had a dental, because he had spurs on his teeth. he didn't recover well the first 2 weeks, not eating on his own afterwards and we had to keep syringe feeding him. took him back to the vet and he had more spurs right in the back of his mouth they had missed, so he had another surgery.

ever since this other surgery 3 ish days ago, his right back leg seems to have stopped working well, the vet said he couldn't feel or notice any kind of fracture so that's out of the picture, he's still not eating on his own and he is just sat looking miserable all the time and it's horrible to see. i'm at a point where i don't know if it's fair to keep him going and see what happens, or to just let him go to rest. it breaks my heart to even write this as he's been my bestfriend since he was a pup, but i genuinely don't know what to think at this point.

any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as i don't want him to be suffering if he is 😞

yeah, he's on metacam once a day :(
Sorry he's so poorly.

I would contact your vet again. You can give metacam twice a day so I would ask to do that while you decide what you think is best. What dose of metacam is he on? And is it cat or dog?

Are you seeing a piggy savvy vet?

I’m sorry to hear this.

Please contact your vet.

Is he on a painkiller? If so is it dog or cat metacam?

It’s worth bearing in mind that piggies can take quite high doses of painkillers but with cat metacam now licensed we do find a lot of piggies get under dosed. Cat metacam is three times weaker than dog metacam.
Piggies are generally given their pain meds twice a day - they metabolise a dose in around 12 hours. A low dose once a day won’t do much to manage pain but should your piggy be on a low dose once a day then it wouldn’t be advisable to split it as each dose is then far too small.
A 1kg piggy can take up to 1.2ml of cat metacam twice a day upon a vet’s instructions and assessment of pain management needs.

Are you weighing him each morning to ensure he is getting enough syringe feed each day?

I’m so very sorry. You did everything you could. Rest in peace little one. He knew he was loved. ❤️

update:
he went downhill really quickly earlier, we think he may of had a stroke. he was put to sleep an hour ago, and our exotic vet agreed it would be the best thing for him.
4 years of loving this boy has broken my heart.
thankyou for the advice guys.
😞

BIG HUGS

I am so sorry for your loss. You have done absolutely the right thing; it is the most loving but also the most hertbreaking gift we can make a beloved pet.

Please try to take consolation in that guinea pigs don't measure their lives in average life spans but in happy todays and an the quality of life you give them. You are clearly a very loving owner and have not failed your precious one. What you never have control about is when, in which form and under which circumstances the end comes.

Please be kind with yourself in the coming days.
