Hi

I wanted to question the purpose of the forum.

I thought it was for People who love guinea pigs to gather on here and give advice, tell of experiences, make friends and to generally make guinea pigs lives better.

Since joining this forum- i have made to feel about a cm tall! I give the best advice i can from experience, what i have read or VETERINARY advice, and it always got thrown back in my face.

I'm not inexperienced, i do the best for my guinea pigs and i follow advice from people here and my vets. I also have many friends who have owned guinea pigs for years and i have always asked them for advice and got success from the advice given.

If people really think I am not able to give advice or think i'm 'inexperienced' I will leave the forum now because i am sick of trying to gain even more knowledge and experience and help a few people out with things i have tried and tested myself or what i have been told by vets and being told I am wrong.

So...as my beginning question- What is the Purpose of this Forum.

Thank you

I think like in all walks of life you will always find that not everyone agrees on what is 'right', and just because you've found something works for yourself doesn't necessarily mean that it's ok to advise others to do it :)

Stick around - things flare up on here from time to time but we're a nice bunch really, and there is lots of good advice on here. I for one have made a lot of friends here.

Many of us feel quite strongly about some issues, but it's only because we care about the guineas :)

You've asked for advice and been given advice. Some of which you have not liked. ALOT of vets have no idea what they are talking about. They are not trained in guinea pig care. A big part of their knowledge is with cats and dog's not with small animals. Rescue as a whole have more knowledge with guinea pigs and few of us are trained in specific rodent care. Ranging from rabbits to mice. Granted we still need to use vets to get certain POM's (prescription only meds) but the dosages given by vets are not always correct.

Alot of people give advice that isnt correct. I'm sure this post was caused because of a few of us not agreeing with the fact you told sombody to syringe feed a baby pig. When you actually ment that you let the baby lap it up from the syringe, not that you actually syringe fed him. Your advice could be used, but not in the context that you gave it. You need to be very specific in methods when giving advice on here. I'm sure your still learning as am I and i have ALOT of experiance and run a rescue, i believe your still learning till the day you die. Alot of my friends on here that own rescues are still learning. There is no shame in learning.

I'm sorry you feel you need to leave.

hi mart
sorry you've been made to feel this way :(
i cant comment on how people have made you feel as i dont think ive seen any of your threads( sorry )
I'm sure people haven't intended to make you feel this way, and all the reasons you've stated as the purpose of this forum are infact what this forums about :)
dont leave I'm sure you have lots of advice to give and like lots of us on here alot to learn :) and I'm not being critical there, nobody knows everything :) x

I'm sorry you feel like this and hope you decide to stay on the forum. I'm quite new to the forum myself and notice that from time to time things are said in the heat of the moment or perhaps not very tactfully put across; it's hard not to take comments personally when they seem directed at you but I don't think it's anyone's intention to make people feel bad. It's more of an unfortunate by-product of a large group of people simultaneously voicing their own opinion/ experiences.
Everyone has something useful to say/ add, whether it's from years of experience or just their own observations of newly acquired pigs (I fit into the latter category). I've gained a huge amount of information in a short period of time from both the more factual posts and those that are anecdotal/ photos.
Best piggy wishes. :)

It is not about the syringe feeding as Its not the first time i have been 'corrected', its about the fact you said i didn't know what i was on about basically.

I keep a folder on all my guinea pigs of weights, health notes, likes, dislikes, when i've bathed them, groomed them, nails done, vet visits etc. I do this so i know everything i can about them and when i do visit the vets they get thrusted a weight chart, hygeine chart and a profile so they know exactly what i know about my piggie and so they get the best care. Yeah i'm not an expert with guinea pigs- but i love mine and they are treated like royalty. The man i saw said he wasn't specialised but he had dealt with a lot of guinea pigs.

The reason i asked where the person i adviced was located was because i was willing to travel to them to show them how i do it- to minimise the danger- yeah i agree my wording is not the best but the person hasn't even replied anyway.

She may have read that and then just gone and done it. You just need to be very specific when giving advice.

yes true- but if they were truely responsible and wasn't sure, they would follow up on here or with the vets
