Good evening,

Just put the pigs back after some floor time.

They are getting more comfortable with me holding them.

What I would like to know is when I stroke them towards the bottom of their back they both make a purring sound and shake a little, is this normal?

Also, is this noise a 'get off I don't like it' or 'thats nice do it again'?

Both do it but neither try to run off.

Any thoughts?

There are two very similar sounds.
One is a 'rumble'. This is a dominance gesture but can also be used as a way of showing discomfort.
There is also the 'purring' noise, which means 'I like that!'

They're extremely similar and hard to tell apart! If you have an iPod/iPhone/iPad, then theres an app called 'guineapedia' which is really useful because it tells you their sounds and what they mean :)
Xx

Guinea pigs do not like to be touched anywhere near their bums so they are warning you off!

If it's when you touch their lower back or bum, I'm betting it's what my son calls the 'angry piggie noise.' Most piggies don't like having their lower backs stroked. Both of mine make this noise when upset, but neither of them really 'purr'- they do make a whistly/squeaky happy noise when happy... one does it when we pat her, the other does it when she's foraging around and playing.

My trio don't like thier back ends messing with either and tend to make a dudder type of noise, bit like a hard purr.

I've got that app, it's very good. I'd like to make one myself but I'm stuggling to find the right software.

Hun i think its enjoying being stroked noise both my girls are sprawled flat out when they do it and start closing eyes..i know they wouldnt be that relaxed if they were not liking it.

Also Cocoa is very much boss and if she don;t like something she certainly lets you know with head butting and nipping you..but when shes purring shes mallow mellow lol

And after all that purring she finds it hard to walk when put her back in cage..she has floppy legs makes me laugh.

Thank you for your question. I've been meaning to ask this exact same one too. My boar also does this when I have him on my chest and I'm stroking him.

He would certainly not think twice to give you a nip if he didnt like something, and when hes making this vibrating noise, he does not indicate to me that he wants to be put into his cage or that he is uncomfortable.

That Youtube link is a perfect recreation of what Bungle does on my lap. I think by trial and error every GP is different and I'm guessing that when Bungle does this, it means he is happy!

I think my piggie is happy when he makes that noise. He is usually eating veggies at the time and yawning a lot.

Both of myy girls do it. They do it everytime they are scratched behind their ears. It's so cute to hear, so it is from contentment and happiness
