I am wondering if anyone on here has the same issue as me with their breed of Teddy Guinea pig?

I have had Guineas for nearly twenty years, all have been smooth haired or Abyssinians. I recently adopted the most gorgeous Teddy, he is HUGE! But like a living walking teddy bear and practically rolls over on his back for cuddles...he is just divine! BUT he makes my eyes itch like crazy. Not one of the others causes this.

Just wondering if anyone has the same issue? I know they are sadly the result of experimental breeding so their hair maybe slightly different. I wonder if It’s the composition of the hair? but it’s just really surprised me...I now have to use eye drops but nothing will stop our cuddles!

This is him with his ex wife (now divorced sadly..they fell out big time!) he’s one great big fluff ball!

I don't know anything about teddies, but I have been very allergic to some pigs but not others. As you say - nothing stops cuddles - I keep antihistamines at the ready - but I've always wondered what causes the allergy and why the variation from pig to pig.

That’s really interesting, thanks for your replies! I wonder what it is?

Yes he is really is a character, i’ve not had one quite like him before, he’s hilarious and quite the comedian! I will also add that he does have two new wives who he adores and you can almost see him smile.

I have read that it is actually a protein in their urine and saliva that people are allergic to. My mom breaks out in hives when she touches them so I did some research. I guess since they groom themselves their saliva is everywhere.

I wonder then why we react more to some than others... sounds sensible though. And weirdly with me anyway, it’s just my eyes and not my skin.

My OH reacts (itchy skin and whelts) to Spike an Aby much more than any of the others. When I was a child I got a skin rash whenever I touched my guinea pigs, I either grew out of it or it was just those particular piggies I was alergic to.

Me neither. To be honest he's also a very itchy pig himself. He has been checked over by a vet and he is fine, skin is all very healthy..but always a little itchy nonetheless. Poor chap!

Don't know anything about Teddys (Teddies?) but would like to learn more, he's gorgeous!

What's the difference between a Teddy and a Rex?

A good few years back now we had Mycroft who my OH was pretty allergic to and he had a fuzzy rex coat. Lovely chap.....a very solid pig.

I've currently got one almost Dalmatian marked pig, two Abyssinians and an Agouti. My Lilith the agouti sets my OH's asthma off, but he seems to be fine with the others......

Excellent question @Tewdric so I had to look it up! See below for the links I found.

Heath has long hair.. on his bum it’s very long and wavy and he has wavy hair all along his back, so I am assuming he’s a Teddy. I think a Rex is similar but has a much shorter and denser coat. Heath’s is lovely and soft much of the time and not too wiry...especially after his bath! Although they state that Teddy’s are small.. umm at 1.6 kg I would argue that point with Heath!

He has just spent all evening turning everything in his cage upside down...including the beautiful fleece cube I bought him and the girls.. he’s always so naughty!

I have a teddy - Jemimah, and fortunately never had any allergic reaction to her or any of the piggies.
I love teddies - they are so cute.

Jemimah wants to know if he’s in the market for a new wife?

oh bless Jemimah! Unfortunately he has two at the moment which he is finding a handful. If he files for another divorce (he has previous) then I he said he'd be in touch...I showed him your picture and he said you are one pretty lady and the other two had better step up quick!

She is gorgeous, I have a new found love for Teddy's they are SOOO cuddly are'nt they?

Jemimah hopes Teddy is very happy with his new wives.
She thinks he is a very handsome teddy pig

Aww he likes that.. his name is Heath by the way. He is now keeping a watchful on his girls and if any puts a paw wrong then he’ll give Jemimah a call.. what a pair :love::beer:
