Hey! I've had my Banjo for 3 years and Buddha for a little over a year. They have two 4ft tables and a fence around it so they have plenty of space. I've always used puppy pads as the base layer then carefresh under their beds. But lately, Buddha has been burrowing and nibbling on the plastic of the pads. I've tried fleece and it didn't work for our needs. What else can I use as a base layer? (They also usually have 2 tunnels that aren't in this picture, so there's plenty of places to sleep and hide)20181017_220336.webp

Vetbed possibl;y? Lovely big cage!

Hmm I'm not sure. There are only really three options for guinea pigs which is bedding, carefresh, or fleece

I use hay on top of puppy pads for my bedding but I have outside piggies. I can see if you have inside piggies you would be reluctant to use hay as it gets EVERYWHERE even when my lot are outside. I have found hay upstairs in my bed before .......

Yeah this picture was taken right after I cleaned the room. The carpet is usually COVERED in hay!

To be honest I think you need something like fleece or vetbed on top of the puppy pads. But have you tried different makes of puppy pads or incontinence pads. Some are scented to attract puppies to wee on them. Those can encourage nibbling behaviour by our piggies.

Vetbed over puppypads works well.vetbed only takes an hour to dry once placed in washing machine, then to dry on a outside line/or indoor clothes horse.my vet fleece is from a company called vetfleece, green backed.i place two layers of puppy pads, then shake vet bed outside once aday.lift out soiled puppypads .change vetbed every 3 days !

I know how you feel haha....I keep my pigs in a carpeted room and I usually have to vacuum the whole room every five days

Update: until I can get new bedding I placed houses in the spots they were eating. Hopefully that keeps them from burrowing!

Which vacuum do you use? Mine gets clogged really easily because of the hay. I broom it up before I vacuum but it doesn't really help. Do you have any tips?

Well usually I'm REALLY careful of how I handle the hay bag but hay just flies around the room sometimes, theres no stopping it lol. I use a Bissel vacuum and I have never had clogging issues, probably because the hay on my carpet is in FAIRLY small bits but it just gets everywhere. I sometimes suggest to people to put some rugs on the carpet closer to your piggy's area-then every week or so, you can just brush them off outside and your carpet will be protected. I can see why you would be annoyed by brooming....I also sometimes just take a wet paper tower and try to collect all the big pieces of hay into one area and then vacuum...it just depends, I think there's a lot of different things you can do but no doubt hay is MESSY.

I think shark vacuums are brilliant for picking up hay.I just empty it a few times if I've been hoovering a lot of hay up.

Hmmm, maybe you could fold the plastic blue part under the white part so they maybe cannot chew it? Or you could slimply cut off the blue part on the edges and leave the blue under and the white absorbant layer.

My piggies would chew that area too (so naughty!), so I would have to work extra hard to make sure the pad was covered. I do notice if they have other things to chew and those toys are rotated that they don't touch the pads.

Good Luck!
