I am currently using a bent c&c square grid as a hay rack. Recently my pigs have just started to tear the hay from the rack as soon as i have put some in the rack and is on the floor within about 15 mins of filling it up, i cant keep filling the hay up every 15 mins mallethead

Is there any alternative racks i can use? Or anything that will stop them from pulling it down so fast?

Well if you don't want the hay to end up on the floor, you can put a litter tray under the hay so when they pull it down, it ends up in the tray. :)

I'm not too bothered about it going on the floor, i just thought the purpose of the hay rack was to keep it off the floor so they couldn't eat soiled hay :)

and thanks claire i'll try that tonight :)

Hmm... Just an idea.. Maybe you could attach the hay rack to the outside of the cage and put some box under that to catch the hay that falls down..that may prevent the pigs from pulling so much out and getting the hay soiled?..Hope that helps.

Haha I can't really help you, mine are still trying to get used to the idea of pulling hay down to eat rather than just eating it straight off the ground like they did before!

But I wouldn't really worry about them eating soiled bedding, mine don't touch it once it's ruined. But someone else said there's did so I guess you can see what it's like with yours.

I was also going to suggest putting the hayrack on the outside of the cage. There are plastic hayracks designed specifically to attach to the outside, which are all enclosed except for the side which sits flush against the cage, so the hay shouldn't drop on your floor!

Toilet roll tubes are a great idea. You could also stuff hay inside a brown paper bag (like a supermarket mushroom bag). Larger hay-filled bags are great for playing in, but you'll find that they'll probably soil them, if they're big enough for them to get inside and burrow in.

Another thought. If you want to keep using the grid rack you already have, perhaps you could cable tie it to the cage, so they can't pull it down....as long as you can still clean it and refill it ok while it's in situ.

I'm assuming that you have a cage but if you have a wooden hutch, I believe there are hay racks designed specifically to attach to the hutch wall.
