Hi all

I was advised by my vet to check on my boars penis every week but i've yet to get it poking out to check, all i've had off the vet it to keep trying and it will pop out sooner or later. I need to check him over as he had a check up and had a lot of discharge built up and got cleaned, i don't want it happening again but i'm sure it not just me that is having problem with it as my boar tries it with the sow but never able to get it out himself.

I've watched videos and read a pdf of how to find the penis and get it poking out but i can find it yet i just can't get it poking out which is making me think something is not right down there for him, his sow seems unimpressed by this problem as well.

Hope this helps, you are not alone, I never found boar bits pop out like that either, usually involves a struggle which upsets both of us! It’s more important with old boars to check than younger ones who can generally keep themselves clean

I hope that the guide pictures will help you but also show you what other boar specific issues to keep an eye on.

It takes a bit of practice to express a penis; usually you have to find the tiny penis ridge under the skin just above penis button. Don't press on it vertically on the end (i.e. pushing the penis into the belly, which usually doesn't go down well), but more horizontally forward towards the penis button or press by placing your fingers on both sides of the penis ridge and gently push towards the button opening.

Unless you have a boar with a very overactive smegma or semen fluid production, it is usually enough to check the penis every 2-4 weeks; the teenage months are usually the messiest. A good way is to feel the area around the penis button and shaft - it shouldn't feel hard or swollen and the penis tip should never look blue, only pinkish to purplish.
You can find cleaning tips etc. in the above guide link, which is part of our practical and helpful New Owners guide collection, which you may want to bookmark and use as a resource. Here is the link: Getting Started - New Owners' Most Helpful Guides

All the best!

Thank you for the help, i did have a good look in the health section and found those posts but when i could not poke it out but could clearly feel it by head/opening it got like 2mm out and that is it, it got very uncomfortable for him so i just stopped and now got a piggy ignoring me even with a treat. The sow was egging him on and all he did was rumble, wiggle his butt then went in his house like he can't get it up.

My boar is neutered as well and 2 weeks ago had a ciss(if that is the word) removed on the scare they made when doing the snip. his very clean but he is 3yrs old and since the snip he has become worse for poop in his sack building up. Not sure if that is causing the penis problem?

Hi!

Please be aware that sows only come into season about every 2 weeks and that they will only be ready to mate for a very few hours right at the end of it. For the rest of the time, a sow is not interested in being mated by a boar and neither will a boar be sexually interested in her unless she produces the pheromones that tell him that she is coming into season. Since your boy is obviously on the submissive side, he won't dominance mount a sow and just rumble-strut to show her what a strapping lad she has chosen as her 'husboar'. ;)
More about sows and their biology and behaviour etc. : Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

Expressing the penis is very often not the most pleasant experience for a boar, so please try again in a couple of days and use our piggy whispering tips to tell him in his own language that you love him but that he has behave.

I have just had a love off him, told him i was sorry but needed to be done, he started pop corning and is eating his hay role(treat).

His a lovely little boy but sure do miss his brother still, she is in season but she eggs him on but after the rumble and butt waggle they both eat or go to sleep. I will give it a few days then try again, i just hope i can get it out this time as i've read the glue part and don't want that happening to him. Shes cleaned his gland, bum and ears for him but she will not let him clean her but they are always kissing but shy when we notice and say lovely lol

Can i ask if shes had a littler before we got her could this be why she don't like him cleaning her/ we noticed when checking her privates are clean she was very open which is making me think she had a litter before being dumped on the rescue door with her sister.

I am sorry; no, a previous pregnancy has no bearing on the issue at all.

Your sow is telling your boy that she loves him but that she is also in charge - in the friendliest way possible. And that she is in total control when he is allowed to touch or mount her - basically every two weeks for a a couple of hours.

How long have they actually been together and how long since your boy has been neutered?

My boy was neutered over 14 weeks now, we have had her 5-6 now, rescue said he was ok to meet the pack and pick his girl. He picked a very shy girl (still is till feeding time or new hay stock) she was squirting him for the first week when we got her.

His been a lovely boy for her as she stopped and he just sniffs, never once seen him clean his bits even at 6 weeks when he got him, both at 3 yrs old and both had cysts removed near to the same time. When she had the cyst removed (big scar) he kept giving her food and waited till she had enough then he started eating, same when he had his removed, they really are lovely babies and show so much care for each other.

Enjoy your piggies for what they are; they are obviously very attached to each other and bless yourself to have such a gentle boy! Better this way than all the drama with an oversexed boar who loses the on switch for their brain and can't stop mounting a sow from whichever angle for days on end...

Squirting from sows that are not willing to be mounted is a very common behaviour. You can always spot a 'husboar' by how cautiously he approaches a bum, ready to jump back the second she lifts her bum for some target practice! :D

Thank you, he is a lovely boy, loves his kisses and cuddles and he loves her to bits. I'm sure she will allow him one day and he will be over the moon.

Thank you for the help and i hope next time i try i can get it out and its clean.

She is not spayed, is she? Spayed/de-sexed sows don't come into season.

Not that i know of, all we know was near to x-mas she was dumped with her sister on the rescue doorstep, we had a vet check up just for peace of mind due to horror stories about rescues and she had a cyst (which was bigger than the lump we felt) no scars or anything indicating spraying, just my boy getting neutered.

Was the cyst you mention one sitting in the skin (sebaceous cyst) or an ovarian cyst in the body?

Anyway, I would not worry. By the way, we have a list of carefully vetted recommended good welfare standard rescues with a mandatory quarantine, vet care, mandatory pregnancy watch for any incoming sows and rescue dating for any single/bereaved piggies where only healthy piggies are put up for adoption and any pairs are carefully matched; you would be made aware of any health issues the rescue had been dealing with pre-adoption. The RSPCA Walsall branchwould be your closest. You can find the rescue locator on the top bar.

We would recommend that you please do not use any postcodes in your location since we are a public place and rather use your county/general area/large city for the UK. Keep in mind that we have members and enquiries from literally all over the world.
You can access your location in your account details by clicking on your username on the top bar.

ovarian cyst under her chin, it was a small lump but when the vet was taking it out it was big, at least 2-3", the scar she has goes from just below her chin to her left arm, all white hard bits.

My boy had two lumps (only small) on the scaring of his cuts for neutering and vet said they was ok but keep a eye on them, one popped which i drained and cleaned and vet checked next day and i did a good job, the other one was noticed by vet when we told her about it and this was just a "keep a eye on it" it got bigger so we booked him in to be removed but while waiting outside the vets that morning it popped but was still told to wait outside with him, cleaned him up but was still charged nearly 200 pounds just to clean and stitch up and we still think the cyst sack is still there as there is a small lump and a long firm line from his cut.

I did try many rescues including rspca but could not get any answers with rspca, rescues would not allow visits due to the lock down so my wife found the cosley one and she had us wait some till all females was ready.

I put dudley, dy1 as dy1 is very big area

Ovarian cysts are located in the ovaries off the womb where the eggs are created to make little babies from. Only sows can get them.

Oh sorry i really should of checked that up. she had one under her chin but vet did not notice it from what they told me but our vet check up noticed it and had been there some time.

Ok tried again today and still nothing, clean sack and did it all right, you can feel his bits but nothing will pop out, starting to worry as how can i keep him clean if it will not pop out the hole.

@sport_billy

Do you have a vet/nurse or somebody local you could recommend to show the poster (if necessary when lockdown conditions are eased)?

I would like to add as in feel i feel a hard long mass going from his hole up on his torso/belly. it moves on its own so i'm thinking this is his penis.
Hi, not sure how you tried to contact us but it is best if you email if you need us again in the future : [email protected]
I phoned up and got the answering machine but i finally got through and i was told no to any 3yr olds and told i could not adopt due to lock down.

(Update) Tried again yesterday and still no look, you can feel it when trying to find it and it goes up and down, tried getting him in the mood and still not popping out. going to get him checked out.
