I rehomed two 2yr old bonded boars 4 weeks ago, they were fine for the first 2wks, then had a fight. I took them back to the rehoming centre where they were treated and assessed and got on fine for the week with no issues. I had them come home again, they had a few dominant issues but settled then had another fight. I spoke to the rehoming centre and the lady has taken them back to be neutered. What are the chances of these two boys living happily together in the future? Or should i save heartache and bring one home once it has bonded with a sow?
I should add these are my first guinea pigs! Any advice welcomed x

Neutering wont change their temparement so if you can I think you would be better with a sow and one of the boars that way they can have a large space rather than two smaller ones

Neutering definitely doesn't help with guinea pigs like it does with rabbits but it does mean they'll be safe to have a lady friend. I agree with madguinealady that you should get one of the neutered boars with a sow & you have a far better chance of a good pairing.

Sorry to hear you have had problems. At 2 years old I would say the problems have arisen from moving to a new home as at 2 the hormones have died down a lot. Moving home can basically change the hierarchy of the pair and they will tussle it out to see who will now be in charge. Things usually die down after a few days, i always provide two of everything to prevent a lot of the conflicts arising. Something as silly as one water bottle could set them off. Was blood drawn when they fought? Neutering won't change them, just stops them reproducing. Its not the same as with rabbits were it calms them down it just stops them spreading their seed. If the rescue neuters them then you would be better having them bonded with a sow and bringing just the pair home :)

I agree with Rodentopia and the other posters. Fall-outs and tussles at that age are due to changes to the balance and relationship of the two in the wake of the move. Neutering won't eliminate that problem. Cross gender bondings, once initial acceptance by the sow has happened, are the most stable of piggy pairings and are often very loving.

PS: Please insist on a full 6 weeks post op wait before your boy is joining the girl you want to adopt. I have the surprise baby courtesy of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post neutering op boar living with me and have since a across other cases; while rare, it really happens! :(
