Since The beginning of Guinea Pig journey in January, I have watched and read everything I could to try and get my pigs potty trained - the only answer I could see was that some owners manage to get it done.

My two babies were in a cage with loose bedding until they started growing and I decided to build a big elaborate cage, and start this with fleece bedding as it would cut down expenditure rapidly.

I then also decided to buy a poop tray that fit in the corner. I used the original loose bedding in this and for a few days, scooped up the poop from the fleece and placed it in the tray.

Not even two days later had both of started using it correctly.

They are not perfect and still poop on the fleece but in comparison to when I first moved them to the new cage it’s easy for me to say that 85% of their poop is now where it should be.

I have even noticed a change in the smell of the fleece as they are predominantly urinating in the tray now too.

Congratulations. I have had some piggies who are cleaner than others but on the whole I have failed to teach them to use a litter tray with any degree of reliability. I’m in awe of anyone who’s managed this.

In our home potty training means the slave is trained to clean the cage regularly and check the house for poops after floor time!

Well done you! Mine aren't too bad, as they usually wee in their trays, but poop......no chance lol. Still, it's easy enough to sweep up.

I tried it with my two older ladies but it didnt work. Polo, a 7 year old, decided it would make a nice bed and Maggie, the piggie who always went to the toilet in the corners anyway and so thought she would adapt, decided that the toilet was an obstruction and found great pleasure in tipping it upside down.
