Hi everyone,

I previously had a guinea pig with IC that was successfully managed with Metacam, cystease and potassium citrate.

We’ve been lucky not to have a to deal with bladder issues recently but my 5 year old guinea pig Daisy seems to have started with the same problem.

She’s under the care of an exotic vet at Cheshire Pet who’s fantastic and we have an appointment on Monday but I’m thinking of trying her with potassium citrate. We’re already giving her Metacam and cystease and she’s had numerous antibiotics that haven’t made any difference. She seems to be having a flare up at the moment and is squeaking a lot when she wee’s. She’s also not eating very much so I’ve stepped in with cc.

I’m also going to discuss Cartrophen injections with the vet on Monday to see if this is an option.

I can’t remember the dosage of potassium citrate as it’s been so long since we’ve used it so I wonder if anyone can help with this?

Is so heartbreaking seeing how much pain she’s in at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

My boy has sterile IC . How much cyst ease does he have? My boy has half a capsule of cystease twice a day mixed with water and syringed on good days. On bad days he has one whole capsule twice daily for a few days until his flare up is under control. He has potassium citrate twice daily but you will need to ask your vet first about the dosage as every pig is different. Cartrophen injections are brilliant it’s a course of four injections. My vet will let my boy have them every three months if needed.

Thank you so much for your reply and advice.

Unfortunately we had to make the decision to let Daisy go to sleep on Monday as she deteriorated very quickly over the weekend. She was so brave and got through lots of health issues in her 5 years but this was just one thing to many. We did the kindest thing we could for her and I know she’ll be popcorning away now.

So sorry for your loss. It's so sad when a piggy has been so brave and got through so many health issues. You just can't see them suffer any more. You showed Daisy your last act of love to let her go to sleep and wake up at the Rainbow Bridge.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s the toughest decision but the kindest one. Big hugs.
