Hi,

I've just picked my guinea pig up from the vets after he had an op to remove a lumb from the top of his hind leg, all went well. He seems fine, nice and alert, but he has a collar on, you know one of those plastic things they put on cats and dogs, to stop him bitting his stiches. I'm a little worried about this collar, will he be able to eat and drink ok with it on? He keeps trying to pull it off and getting his front foot stuck in it! I'm not to sure about it.

Plus he lives with another piggie should I separate them? Or leave them together?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Karen

I've not heard of collars being put on piggies but that's not to say they don't. Someone else on here may be able to help you with this point. Separating piggies that have been together for a while can cause stress so I wouldn't separate them unless it is really necessary. If you are worried about him eating you could always hand feed him some food so you know that he's getting it and give veggies/fruit with lots of water in them like cucumber, celery, etc and syringe him so water so he doesn't dehydrate or bring the water bottle to him so he can drink himself. Hope this helps.

Can't help with the collar situation, sorry, but my Daisy had an op on Monday and I've put her straight back in with Clover. They seem fine together and I think it would have been a bit stressful for Daisy to be isolated.

Collars should not be put on gps,I would be inclined to remove it.
I agree with the advise not to seperate your pigs, the stress caused by this will hamper the recovery.
Keep the piggy warm as surgery always causes a bit of shock to the system.Give a vitimin C supplement for a few days to boost the immune system.
You have already been given good advise about making sure she is drinking enough.

my piggy never had a collar on when he had his op it depends if they will pick at it ring your vets tomorrow and tell them the situation as from separating them it does cause upset and stress good luck x

Thank you for your help.

I have left the collar on but did take it off for a while but he started to pull at his stiches so have put it back on. But i have had to ammend his cage a bit so he could reach his food and water and he can now drink and eat fine.

I did leave him with his friend as I too thought it would be a bit stressful to separate them. I have been giving him a vit c supplement aswell.

Today he seems fine and is managing better with the collar on, I've never had a gp have surgery before so it's all a bit new to me! But he's pooping and weeing fine, is bright and alert and is eating and drinking fine so it's all going well just now.

Thank you again for all your help and advice.

Karen x

Hi Karen,
Our vet recommended cutting the toe out of an old sock and putting it round our piggy who had surgery on his tum to stop him pulling his stitches.. maybe you could put something like this round his leg, as long as he doesn't try to bite it off!
