My neutered boar , Toffee, has been on a week long course of antibiotics to treat a URI. He seems to be over the URI now but he is very much not himself . He mostly sits still , somewhat hunched and with his chin on the floor . His coat looks a different condition too.He will eat a little if hand fed twice a day , and he does seem to be eating his hay although not as much as I would expect . This has been the pattern all week . I have been presenting him with his water bottle to ensure he drinks and he will accept it. He is pooping much less than usual and I’ve noticed that although he doesn’t want to eat much proper food , he seems keen to eat anything he should not eat - cardboard , carpet , fleece !
I am thinking the antibiotic has upset his system , but obviously this is just supposition .
I am thinking I should syringe feed him critical care and maybe a probiotic ? Any advice welcome .

Hello and welcome to the forum
When did he see the vet and when was the medication prescribed.? What was the medication? When is he due to see the vet again?
He sounds to me as if he needs to see the vet again pretty sharpish, as what you are describing is an unwell piggy. Any piggy sitting hunched with his coat fluffed or rough looking and who is not eating is very poorly. Please get him seen by the vet today if possible. In the meantime you are right that you need to be syringe feeding him critical care little and often. But please get him seen as soon as you can by the Vet

Hi thanks for the reply ,
Toffee saw the exotics vet exactly a week from now . He was given 0.25 ml of oxycyclene once a day for seven days , 0.7ml metacam twice a day for seven days and 0.1ml cisapride suspension twice per day for seven days .
He ate about 5 half tea spoons of mushy pellets after my post this morning and then did a load of poop which has been very limited this week , but these were what I would call good poops. I went and got him some probiotic powder to put in his water and he is accepting that from his bottle just fine . He seems a little more active than this morning . He is washing himself and moving around more .
He didn’t have a follow up appointment that the vet - but depending on how things are this evening it is likely I will take him in the morning .

I would always request a follow up appointment for a URI so the vet can check the chest and see whether longer or different course of ABs is needed. My vets always make one as a matter of routine.
I would definitely get him seen tomorrow - better safe than sorry.

Thank

Was that Doxycyclene?

Yes sorry Doxycycline.
Toffee became increasingly unwilling to eat, kept trying to lay down and curl up and appeared to have a pain response when handled, so I took him to the out of hours vet .
She said that he seemed to have a bad case of bloat which they could treat and monitor , then if no response an X Ray would be the next step. They kept him in overnight .
Today they report he has eaten and pooped and the signs are good but they are keeping him another 24h .

Oh poor Toffee. Bloat is so painful. Good to hear they have got his guts moving again.

Thank you .
toffee is home today . We are going to monitor him carefully but the signs are good.
