Hello all,

Before I start, piggie has a vet appointment already but I’m just after some advice, and a general idea of what to expect…

Izzie is 2 years old. We took her to the vet a couple of weeks ago due to a bald spot on her back, and on her side. She’s also gradually lost weight over the past couple of months (935g now), she drinks and wees A LOT.
A urine sample was taken, which ruled out diabetes. Vet said her wee was a bit diluted. We were advised to treat for mites for the time being, as that was fixed the bald issue in the past, before we went onto any invasive treatments and to bring her back if she doesn’t improve. Vet also pre-warned of other things it could be, as the location of the bald spot on her side can indicate ovarian cysts. But the wee issue could be kidneys.

Fast forward to now, her bald spots have become worse. It’s on both of her sides now, a teeny bit missing from under her eye and, I may be being paranoid, but one of her front legs looks like it’s lacking fur. She’s still drinking and weeing a lot, and just generally seems a bit off. She spends a lot of her time napping. She’s still eating though.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience, and what it turned out to be? And what treatment can be done for both conditions I have mentioned above?

Thank you in advance,
From a worried pig mum x

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry. I would recommend having the kidneys checked but the baldness with loss weight could point to Cushings - if only for your vet to rule it out. Unlike with hamsters, it is very rare in guinea pigs and there is sadly no treatment; there is unfortunately also very little for kidneys going wrong.

Any metabolic or small organ diseases are sadly still very much suffering from piggies being ignored by research for so long and because medical transfer between species is not as straight forward as it in other areas.

However, these are only wild guesses I can make.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. She has just had a scan, and they’ve found a small cyst on her ovaries. She is being spayed on Monday. Hopefully this will solve the problem completely. :)

I hope all goes well keep us updated and we are all here for any support 💗
Thank you so much, I will do! I’ve luckily got a few days booked off work next week, so I will be able to be with her to keep an eye on her. I’ve already warned my husband that I’ll be super restless all day Monday, will just have to keep myself distracted 💕
