Hi,

Can you recommend any good guinea pig vets in London at reasonable price? Suspect that my guinea pig has stones in bladder.

Two days ago I spotted blood in guinea pigs urine. No blood in urine since then. Pig does not show any symptoms of illness. Pig was taken to a vet and examined. Nothing apparent but to say for sure test needs to be made (including x-Ray). X-Ray was not available immediately so pig was taken home. Vet did not seem too concern about delaying X-ray for a bit. I was given a quote for tests which is more than I expected. If anyone had the same problem please recommend a vet and a range of price.

Thanks
Anna

Hi!

Did your vet palpate the bladder? With a stone is is definitely not soft and relaxed.

The symptoms for bladder stones, urine infection, bacterial and sterile cystitis are all pretty much the same in the very early stages. urine and bladder infections can take several days to get really going and for the symptoms to become consistent.

The red in the pee is usually porphyrine and not blood by the way although blood can be present without colouring the urine.

You can always ask any clinic what they charge for their consultations and x-rays.

Vet tested pee with a stick and it colored positively for blood traces.
I was given a bottle to take a proper sample. So they can check for all types of things.

Just wanted to add that in my own experience an x-ray is really an essential diagnostic tool.
My piggy presented with a blocked urethra, and the only way to confirm stones was via x-ray.
The x-ray showed sludge rather than stones, and this was removed under anesthetic with flushing (cheaper and less invasive than surgery).
But without the x-ray she would have been opened up due to the blockage.
Luckily we were seen by an experienced guinea pig vet who knew that the x-ray was necessary before surgery.

Thanks. This is where we went a week ago. The pig is now back home recovering after operation. He had a stone which is now removed. :)
Great to Hear! My pig had a stone removed yesterday and is currently quiet in recovery... fingers crossed for my little boy
