Hi everyone, haven’t been on as Iv been worried about princes. She’s still doing the strange chewing on nothing & has lost weight. She’s eating but not as active. I may just be paranoid which I know I am with both of them but I’d hate to think it’s anything dental & that she’s in any pain. I can feel she’s lost weight picking her up. She’s munching away on grass happily but I just want to know. I wandered is it a risk sedating them as I just can’t think how they will be able to check her molars. If dentals suspected would the first need to perform an X-ray under sedation? Any advice on dental or in general will be appreciated because I’m worried sick. I didn’t know when I got these girls they would steal my heart so much & how much love id have for them. They have become my everything & I haven’t been sleeping over worry x

I think I want a dental X-ray anyway to see if both their teeth are ok or if there’s anything not right. Iv read a lot of posts on here about dental & I guess it’s really common for pigs & that worries me sick. At least if they had an X-ray each I would know if their teeth are ok. X

Hello. If you suspect your piggy has a dental issue, only a vet will be able to diagnose and treat. But if she is losing weight, it could be a dental issue. If sedation is needed to check the back of the mouth, a slight whiff of gas should do

Hello, thank you for replying. Would it be gas they would normally use for checking pigs mouths? That’s better than going under as she won’t even let me near her mouth. I think it is dental & forgot to say she has an appointment at 2 tomo with vet thank goodness so see what they say Iv been so worried x

Just noticed this colour urine & you can see in one picture a bit of mucus. I’ve taken pictures to show vet it doesn’t look normal to be x

I’m glad that you have her booked in to see the vet. Yes, it should be gas that they use. That looks like oxidised urine to me which is perfectly normal but by all means, show your vet as I’m not sure about the mucus x

It probably is normal but that helps to hear that as I wasn’t sure. She’s still eating & drinking just off cucumber but I think that’s just a faze. She’s eating pelkets, hay & grass along with peppers & cucumber daily. I was just looking on here at how much veg to feed & saw the sample plate. Iv been giving mine to much veg so will cut down on that. Iv been giving only a tablespoon of pellets now daily each & got hay from haybox. She doesn’t seem herself & has lost weight I can feel it so want her checked over. Could I ask how you would know if a guinea pig has a uti or would you even know? I’m getting worried about everything to be honest. I guess if she was really sick she wouldn’t eat or drink x

If she is losing weight, then it is good that you’re seeing the vet. A piggy with a uti usually has blood in their urine and squeaks in pain when urinating although not always. They can also lose weight and seem off.
I feed my pigs the sample plate of veggies too x

Thank you for that, most certain it not uti anyway as none of those symptoms thankfully. My girls have been getting to many cucumbers, pepper, parsley & coriander but at least I know know what amounts right now & will start that tomo. Will see if vet finds anything tomo. Iv got a scale for weighing on way so will be great when that comes so I can do that. Will update tomo on vets visit x

Parsley shouldn’t be fed daily due to the high levels of calcium. Good luck tomorrow and I hope it’s nothing major.

Morning, so glad I found the the veg plate pic & read the stuff because I hadn’t known about the high calcium in parsley. Hope Iv not done any damage to them, Iv has the girls 2-3 months. Parsley wasn’t each day I worded it wrong but still they were getting to much so stopping that now. They love coriander but all in all was giving to big portion size of veg so today is the piggy platter for the girls. Thank you will update later after vets x

Hope you get on ok at the vets. It’s tough when you suspect something is wrong but can’t clearly identify what it is.

Yes it really is & still getting to know them. She is eating fine & her & queenie were popcorning & zooming through their tunnels playing chase this morning. I’m now thinking if it was a dental issue non of that would be going on. I just feel when I lift her she’s lost weight & didn’t seem herself. Maybe it was an off few days or the to much veg I was giving. Do you think I should wait for my scales to arrive & weigh her or still see the vet? Just not sure what to do now x

I think I should just take her & at least the vet will check her teeth to see if they are ok & if they are my mind will be put at ease once & for all. When this is all over I will get queenie in for her check also. I’m taking them together like lastime so they feel safe. At first queenie was the most scared of being picked up etc but now it’s princess because the poor darling had a haircut & doesn’t like it at all bless her. Even when I brush her & don’t hurt her she squeaks a bit I think she’s worried I will give another hair cut x

There’s no harm in taking her. If it turns out all is well then that’s good. Ask the vet to weigh her as well so you have a reference point. When are the scales arriving?

That’s us home from vet & all seems ok. She is lower weight than princess but with all going on I forgot to write down both their weights. Will phone back though. He said nothing noticeable on examination but that the chewing could be dental or digestive or just something she does. He gave me critical care to have & I'm to keep weighing her. If any changes then take her back. He did say that she had a green like liquid at the back of her mouth that he cleaned out with water from a syringe & that queenie had it but not as much as princess. He didn’t know what it was but after lockdown or if things get worse he will sedate her & have a proper look & clean of her mouth. He also said dental issues at their age 17weeks old is uncommon. X
