I noticed today that my female Guinea has what looks like a red lump hanging down from her backside. I’m not sure if this is a prolapse? She’s eating and drinking normally and her behaviour hasn’t changed at all. I will attach an image once I work out how to.

Hello and welcome. It takes a while for photo upload permissions to kick in. Is the lump on her grease gland (where a tail would be) or from her nether regions?

This will need looking at by the vet tomorrow.

Hi and welcome

Anything hanging from her genitalia should be investigated.

A prolapse of the womb is generally greyish in colour, though, and counts as a life or death emergency because the longer it is outside the more it swells and the more difficult (and then impossible) it is to put back by the vet.

We are taking her to the vets in the morning as our closest vets is closed and I do not have transport to get to the others which are much further away. I am struggling to upload any pictures as the only options to upload I can see are through a media link or URL?

Hi

Please wait a little longer while your status is processed. As soon as your status as New Born Pup is showing underneath your green S avatar icon on the left, the attach files button underneath any post you are writing will be available for you, too.

That looks worrying and should be seen asap, to be honest.

I thought so too. I’m extremely worried but I physically cannot get to a vet until the morning so I don’t know how I will sleep tonight

Sorry for the late reply but it’s been a difficult day. Sydney passed away today as the vet said she was in a lot of pain and the prolapse surgery would highly likely be unsuccessful. So with the vets advice we made the decision to euthanise her. thank you everyone for the responses last night x

I’m very sorry to hear that.

BIG HUGS
I am so very sorry.
Please take consolation in that you did the kindest thing you could under the circumstances. It is one of these issues that are thankfully very rare but it can happen spontaneously right out of the blue; it is not something you can ever brace for or prevent. More commonly it happens as a post-birth complication. Even getting her to the vets straight away may not have come off. You can always only do your physical best in the circumstances - and they are sadly much more often against you than you like, as I know from my own experiences. It's not your fault and you haven't done anything wrong; it just happened at a really bad time - and timing is always out of our control. :(

If you struggle with processing the shock, the trauma of how it happened and the loss, then the free Blue Cross pet bereavement services would be the best place. They now offer help on several platforms so you can choose what suits you best. Talking is the best thing you can do for yourself.
Blue Cross pet bereavement services: Pet bereavement and pet loss

We have a Rainbow Bridge section that is open to anybody who would like to post a tribute at whatever stage during or after the grieving process if they feel that it would help them. There is however no pressure; it is just an available option.
