Hi all,
I have noticed one of my guinea pigs is scratching a lot and has dandruff in her fur, she also has a v-shape on her back. I can’t get her to the vets until some point next week and I’m worried that if it is mange mites it could get worse very quickly. I wondered if it would be quicker and easier to just buy Xeno 450. I have never used it before and was hoping to get some opinions on it. Is it safe to use and what would happen if they licked it off/ingested it? Also should I isolate the treated piggy from the rest of the group after treatment?

Personally I would not use ivermectin without being given a dosage by the vet. Most medications are dosed by animals weight, strength of medication and the animals health and I would assume ivermectin would be no different.
If you have a magnifying glass you can identify the type of parasite by wiping some wet tissue paper through the coat and collecting the dust (and parasites) you can then inspect it with the magnifying glass or microscope. Also, if one has parasites the other most likely will too.

I don’t know if you may be able to keep her comfortable by using gorgeous Guineas parasite shampoo while waiting for a vet appointment, of course only do this if you definitely know she has them. I am not an expert though.

I wouldn’t remove her from her friend/s, they would likely be already contaminated, if at all.

If you really can’t get to the vet, is there anyone else who can take them?
Please do not use at home treatments without a vets input.
The least you could do is give the vet a phone i guess and see if they will/can advise anything over the phone, but i’d doubt it.

I would also urge you to be careful with using any shampoos, parasitic or not, as this will remove/mask evidence. Again at least without a vets input.

Please do not home treat. You don’t know the dosage and what you don’t want to do is under treat or make way for resistance in future.

I would try and her booked in. Perhaps you could make a late appointment? Or, as above, have someone who could take her for you.

:agr: Please don’t remove her from her friends. They have already been exposed. The other thing is that separation can cause stress.

Hope she’s seen soon and starts getting better.

Thank you everyone, I will avoid treating her myself. I’m 16 so I can’t drive, the earliest my mum can take me to the vets with them is Tuesday evening (if there are any free appointments), do you think she’ll be ok until then? Also should I take all of them to the vet since the others may be contaminated too?

It’s a good idea to take bonded piggies to the vet together in any event.
The guide I linked in explains all the steps which you need to take once you have seen the vet.
Do get an appointment as soon as you can.
