Hello! Uhm I believe my guinea pig, Sophie, has an ear infection but I’m unsure. Today when I looked at her, her head was tilting to her left side and seemed to be stuck. She crawled on my lap and every time I touched her ear she would shake me off, then would constantly scratch it throughout the day. I then noticed she had trouble wrapping her mouth around her water bottle. These are all symptoms of what I read to be a ear infection and plan on calling the vet tomorrow. Are there any specific antibiotics I should ask the vet for, or any medications that should be avoided at all costs?

Also would she have to get an x-ray? She has had a runny nose ever since we got her and I’m confident the moment they temporarily put her to sleep that she will end up not waking up :( any advice is welcomed, I never had to deal with an ear infection and really want her to recover.

If it is an ear infection (and of course only a vet can diagnose, there are other this which can cause head tilt), then antibiotic is the normal treatment. She really shouldn’t need an x ray if is just an ear infection.

Has a vet seen her for the runny nose before? That isn’t something which should be left unchecked but there can be several causes behind it

Thank you, I’m glad to hear that
She was checked and was put on medication(specifically Doxycycline) however she continued having a runny nose but acted as herself so we didn’t consider bringing her back in

id have it looked at again. Sometimes it continues because the medication given was not the right one or the course wasn’t long enough.
after any medical issues have been ruled out, if this kind of thing persists then look at the type of bedding and hay being used (whether it’s too dusty for example) or whether there are any irritants in the room (candles, scented items, perfumes etc - all of which can cause issues for piggies delicate respiratory systems)

Ohhhh, that makes sense, I’ll make sure to bring it up in tomorrow’s vet visit. Thank you for the advice :^)
