digby and winston
New Born Pup
My guinea pig winston (3 years, male) has made this sort of snorting congested sound for a good few months on and off. As in i will hear it not often but enough for me to recognize it and it doesn't last all day. If i go away for a few hours and come back it seems like nothing has happened at all and that's why i wasn't particularly concerned. At first i thought it was a cute little sound he made when he was excited as sometimes it will sound like cooing which I read can be trying to soothe a partner or more likely in a bore pair another hierarchy dominance thing. One day it was really quite bad and i asked someone else with video evidence and they told me it sounded normal.
Today it was really quite bad and lasted for most of the morning (videos in reply as I'm not sure how to post them on pc!) . He sounds quite congested and and when I listened closer it sounded like it was in his nose/head. I have to add he makes it when he is sniffing/eating which is why i believe it could be congestion but also he can breathe normally without making the noise even when he has having one of those moments when the sounds are prominent. I guess i am just really confused/concerned. With concern i researched and have found out a lot about congestion and that it can be quite dangerous to guinea pigs but he has been making this sound on and off for ages. I would like to believe it is something that is not going to kill or make him more sick him as it has been going on for so long but obviously I am concerned and maybe he's just been lucky enough to not be affected enough. I am planning/wanting to take him too the vet but as it has been going on so long I was sort of hoping someone would have a pig who makes similar noises or if their was any home remedies. I am not opposed to the vets would just rather get some second opinions after my own judgement.
My guinea pigs live outside in a garage, they are sheltered and during the night the area they sleep is covered with a blanket that is slowly being reduced as we go back into the summer months and its been quite hot here in north-east Scotland. They have to live on sawdust as it is the safest option for them living 'outside' and with the unpredictable uk temperatures. He eats some sawdust every now and again and also chews on anything he can. Even when he has 4 willow toys and piles of hay in his cage. Hes also known to be a barber to my long haired older guinea pig as he is quite a nervous pig and he always has been, (he is the one in my profile picture). He eats and drinks and runs about happily the whole time, he is the first pig i have never had a health scare with until now.
Could do with any tips or suggestions/stories of your own. Everything's welcome just looking for some advice ps. i am sorry for the noise and the loud sniffing at one point he was directly on top of my phone.!
Thanks! x
