I recently got a pair of piggies from a rescue. One of them has a large soft stool today (not liquid but soft and unformed and a large amount) and seems bloated. She is usually a chubby girl, but if I gently push on one side of her belly, the other side seems to pop out- it sounds weird but I don’t know how else to describe it! It’s currently nighttime here, is there anything I can do for her until the morning? She is eating and drinking water and moving around still, the only 24/7 vets around here are horribly expensive and do not specialize in exotic pets, but I am not sure what to do!

Hi! Your poor piggy! Most of the members here are UK based so they are all in bed. I cannot advise you, as I am not an expert. I have copied the forum's guides on bloat. Please read these as they are very helpful and can advise you on what to do; I do know that bloat is very bad for guinea pigs. Fingers crossed for your piggy!

Those links were super helpful, thank you! She is currently making her usual rounds around the cage and eating and drinking along with her sister so at least she doesn’t seem to have the really severe bloat.

Please have your piggy seen by a vet

Please do not give her any veggies as this will make any digestive issues worse. Please only feed her hay until her poops normalise. Any full liquid diarrhoea is considered an emergency.

Please switch to daily weight checks so you can be sure she really is eating enough hay. This will enable you to step in with syringe feeding appropriately.

I’ll be calling the vet in about 8 minutes when they open! I will absolutely start weighing them both! She has had hay and water only and thankfully is still stuffing her face. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!
