Hi all,

When I put my hand in my GP's cage, one guinea pig in particular comes up to me and sniffs my hand. He then puts his mouth slowly around my finger to a point where I can just feel his teeth (hence how I know he is doing it) - but I just pull my finger out in case he bites me.

What do I do? Is he trying to bite me? He isn't making any noises.

Thanks
John.

It rather sounds like he is exploring for veg, especially if your fingers taste nicely. You may find this guide here helpful: Biting

Guinea pigs are a bit like young children, they explore their world using their senses including their mouth. The guide Wiebke has posted is a good one to check out.

Generally guinea pigs are not big biters (unlike some other small rodents) but may nibble to investigate new things, to tell you they want/need something or as part of mutual grooming/affection.
