Three out of four of my piggies make a popping noise when breathing... the only way I can describe it is a “pop” in the nose - I’ve tried to listen out in their chests, and there’s no crackling there.

Ozzie has literally been popping since we adopted him in August 2019. We’ve been to the vets a few times with him and mentioned it, but the vet had a listen and didn’t hear anything concerning. He’s only one sneezed with snot, and it was after sticking his head in hay so I presumed he was just clearing his nostrils. He’s always had eyes that get crusty every few days, but other than that he is perfectly healthy in all ways.

Miki has also been popping since we’ve had him home (since the beginning of Feb), and again there are no other symptoms. He is full of life, completely healthy in all aspects.

Nelli also has been popping since she came home. She’s been at the vets, under anaesthetic etc and it has never been picked up as a concern. Her eyes are clear, and she’s acting completely normal. She has twice sneezed just before cleaning herself where snot came out onto my sister. It was completely clear.

Only lulu and Benio never did this nose popping, so I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong? We’ve tried different types of hay, different types of detergent, I air out my room every day etc but nothing seems to help...

What do you need them on? We have a piggy that ‘pops’ and always has for the past three years it worries me at first but getting used to it

Mine is doing the same thing too. I went to the vet weeks ago for respiratory infections. And took antibiotics and probiotics. Then went for a follow up check up, everything is fine. His lungs all clear. He is gaining more weight now, eating and drinking much better than when he was sick before. But still making that popping noise. My vet suspected might be because of allergies. But not sure what is the cause. Should I be worried? Can it be because of dust fleece or detergent? Hm

I don’t want to give any vet advice, as obviously I don’t know your pig or the circumstances. BUT my Ozzie is still here, completely healthy, been to the vet for other thing and always had a clear breathing and lungs.. and he’s still popping! I think pooping can sometimes be nothing or sometimes may indicate URIs.

I have heard of piggies being allergic - either to the type of hay used/the hay not being dust extracted, to the detergent used, or any other scents used in the room. If your piggy was checked over by a vet, and the vet is satisfied I wouldn’t worry.

You’re better off starting your own thread - this one is from June. Do a thread in the H&I section where it will be seen.
