Hi, iv noticed my guinea pig not really moving today. He is just sat in the corner of the cage. He is not accepting food or water either. I have took him to my emergency vets and they have gave him pain relief. They said his belly is swollen, his heart rate is slow and his body temperature is low too. They dont know what is wrong until they do tests and xrays (asking for £450-£500) without treatment. I have brought him home with pain relief but they dont expect him to make it through the night. I am hoping he makes it through the night and i will take him to my vets tomorrow.
Has anyone experienced this and had piggies recover?

I’m sorry to hear this.
please step in and syringe feed him. Piggies need fibre constantly going through their gut so if he isn’t eating hay for himself you need to syringe feed either mushed uo pellets or a recovery feed (such as critical care). This is the most important step you can take at home to keep your piggy going. You are aiming for 90ml of feed in a 24 hour period - this can be a few ml every couple of hours depending on how much he will take at a time.
weigh him daily to ensure he isn’t losing weight and that you are getting enough syringe feed into him.
i hope he has made it through the night

I’m sorry your piggy is unwell. As well as the above, please try and get him seen by your usual vet today if possible. Call as soon as they’re open and explain everything. Hopefully they will let you come in. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thank you. I'm afraid he didn't make it through the night. We syringe feed him after the vets last night, wrapped him up warm and hoped he would pull through. Rip my little Grassy xx

Thank you. I'm afraid my little boy didn't make it though the night. He was wrapped up as his heart rate and body temperature was so low. He died next to hid brother. His brother has been crying(weeking) all morning. He knows x
