Hi guys.

I really need some advice. Anything would be greatly appreciated.
My little man is only a year and half, I woke up Saturday just gone, went to feed him at normal and noticed he was puffed up, on closer inspection I see white stuff in his mouth and lump on the side of his face, a little like chalk, no idea what it was but pulled it out as much as I could. Took him to the vets and she had no idea but removed loads form his throat. She said she see nothing wrong with him.
He perks up Saturday and eats a little.

Sunday morning we then notice he has diarrhoea and is bleeding from his Willy and isn’t really picking his head, isn’t eating or leaving his house.
Again I wish him to the emergency vet and they say they think he has an abscess. Antibiotics and pain relief followed but critical care food.
He perks yo again Sunday and eats a little bit, his diarrhoea has given but he isn’t popping or weeing .
Monday rush Back the vets and she looking at me waiting for me to let him go, at this point my hearts breaking and I ask for 24 hours so I can allow the kids and his brother to say goodbye.
She gives me more critical care food and Tuesday is much the same. I’m hand feeding him, at this point I’m doing research all Tuesday desperate to try find something to help him, i then get told about pro biotic and gripe water to help him go to the toilet as it’s likely the antibiotic is stopping him go.
I ordered some and by Wednesday (yesterday) it’s delivered and I’m preying it helps, nothing was working in till I took the little toad to the vets to put him to sleep, he decides he isn’t ready to go and perks up again (maybe the smell of the vets made him think sod that I’m not having them pull me around again )
Anyway he decides to poo in the vets hands 🙌 amazing, I’m crying with hope I won’t lose my baby.
She then says I not putting him to sleep he’s a different guinea pig from the one I see lifeless on Monday. The thing is he still ain’t eating without my support and a syringe.
He’s now popping and it’s solid but it’s very long and very skinny.

He’s now squeaking again when i cuddle him but he isn’t interested in any normal solid food, he isn’t active and jauy sits still, he is still taking antibiotics and I just don’t know what to do to help him.

Can anyone give me some advice, he’s such a little happy cheeky little lad normally , and I wanna help him have that little sparkle again
( plus I miss him yelling at me when he hears the fridge door open)

Hi

If your boy is peeing and pooing again, then please give him a little more chance for the antibiotic to work; it can impact on the gut macrobiome (the digestive bacteria) and kill the appetite.

Has he been given painkillers and has the regular vet checked his penis shaft? What medication and which dosage have you actually been prescribed?

The problem seems to not be sitting in the gut (you only see coming out what has gone into him 1-2 days before) but it is more likely from pain radiating into the gut. Gripe water won't help unless there is mild gassing; it doesn't stimulate the gut movement.

If there is no improvement by the end of the course of antibiotics, then please see the vet again. How experienced are they with guinea pigs?

Thank you so much for responding.

So I’ve tried every vet around my area for one that deals with Guinea pigs, sadly the only two that do won’t take him till the end of the month,so Just a regular vets at the moment as a vet is better then no vet at all.

I have every intention on giving him the best possible chance, the only reason I was preparing to say goodbye was how poorly he was. He’s my baby, going nowhere without a fight.

He has been given pain relief and he has been fully checked over, don’t get me wrong the vet was very lovely but I don’t think she checked the shaft if I’m honest.
He did have cystitis on Sunday and that was the cause of him bleeding.

I will stop the gripe water as I’ve only given him it twice yesterday and today at 3ml.

The antibiotics are 0.2ml 12 hourly / says on the bottle 3.0 ENROCARE CONCENTRATE. other than that nothing else is written on the bottle. I am looking at going further a field to find a vet for Guinea pigs as he is slowly perking up

My heart goes out to you but you are doing so well to get him pooping again. The poops run a day or so behind input so it could well be that the antibiotics are tackling an infection and he's managing to pick up a bit!
Perhaps you are nearer the Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northamptonshire who are very good with piggies. Have a little google. They are popular and you might (or might not) have to be referred by your current vet but if you are phoning round tomorrow it would be worth a call as they have a very good rep on this forum. If you can find a little fresh grass tomorrow it might tempt him to try eating on his own - make sure it hasn't been peed on by any dogs and isn't from a roadside.

Tomorrow I'm calling in at my vet for more syringe food for my old boy - ours is called 'Recovery' but we've also used Critical Care and there is another called Emeraid that people have said is good too. I'm going to add some probiotic called Fibreplex which is good for upset guts (like when antibiotics are involved). These things don't need prescriptions as it's just food so any vet should stock some sort of recovery syringe food and a probiotic powder or paste you can mix in.

Hello.

Thank you for your advice and recommendations, Northampton is miles and mile from me. I see a vets in Abingdon Oxfordshire recommended on here so Il be calling them tomorrow for advice or a consultation if possible.

He’s been so chirpy tonight and chatting away so i know he has so much fight left in him.
We have a garden so il happily get him some fresh grass in the Morning and I will also order the fibre flex tomorrow.

Hope your little fur baby is ok and sending him lots of love. They’re such loving little beauties.
