Hi guys , I’m new here so not quite sure how it works ! My four year old guniea pig is having trouble pooping . I think he’s got impaction . Took him to vets on Sunday and she manually emptied his bowel and prescribed him emeprid and pain relief. Just wondering if anyone has been through this as he’s still struggling and I’m not sure if it takes awhile to work ?

Hello and welcome, I personally have no experience with this but I'm certain someone more experienced will be along soon.

Impaction is quite common in older boars as they lose muscle tone I believe. We've had a few where we have to manually empty them out regularly to keep them comfortable.

Is there any particular food that you think might help ?

Honestly I've not heard of a food that could help. A high fibre diet won't hurt though, which he should already be getting if he's eating plenty of hay 😊

Ok thanks for replying. Yes lots of hay , just trying to do all I can

I’ve had an older piggy with impaction. He didn’t need any pain or gut medication. He could poop normally but he collected a lot of squishy poops in his anal sack. This just needed emptying every day as his was quite bad.

Is you piggy pooping ok now? Hopefully this guide will help you.

Thank you so much , I will have a read of the links . He’s been off the medicine for three days now . He’s eating hay , drinking and nibbling on some kale . But still not pooping as much ! I have noticed a collection of small poops in his anal sack that with a little help come out pretty easy , so currently keeping an eye on that and his weight .
