Has anyone ever had a pig with a respiratory infection, but with frothing?

My poor boy seemed to be coughing up mucus this morning, and seems to by hyper-salivating, which makes him look like he's frothing at the mouth!

He's still eating and drinking (and peeing and pooping!)... i'm wondering if he has a cold... he usually lives outside all year, but it's been so wet and cold the last week!

I've brought him indoors to keep an eye on him for a while, and will take him to the vet if necessary... just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?!

Thanks!

Have just booked an appointment for later this afternoon... he's indoors in his new house, so he's cosy and warm... but I'd rather take him to be checked out than wait any longer, I'll update later on what the vet says...

Would still like to know if anyone has had anything similar with their piggies though... you know, sharing experience & knowledge etc..

Have not seen or heard of this before, could it be dental possibly :(
Hope he is ok and please let us know how the vets visit goes :)

Thanks! Been to the vet, she doesn't think it's dental, she had a good look in his mouth and couldn't see anything obvious... he's on antibiotics now, and has some nutrient mix in case he doesn't resume eating properly (I'm going to give him some of that regardless, nutrients might help him feel better!)

I have to take him back monday if he's not any better so that they can investigate further.

So glad you took him in to the vets. The fact that she's given him some meds and nutrient mix (what's it called out of interest?) shows that there might be an infection there. Sorry if I'm about to tell you something you alresdy know now but please make sure that he has plenty of fresh soft hay (not straw) to eat to keep his teeth from overgrowing.
there are some very informative threads on this site regarding health, housing, etc.
Here's a good place to start.

Is that the chappy in your avater? I hope he gets back to normal very soon.

Hi!
Thanks for the links, I'll look through them...

Unfortunately he's not eating hay, veg or his mix, he as plenty of each... he's become very weak overnight and I'm having to syringe feed him nutrient mix (superplan recovery or something) and baby food (vet recommended) which he hates but is bravely putting up with!

I'm going to take him back to the vet tomorrow, she said to if he hadn't improved, and i honestly don't think he will :(

That is him in the Avatar... he's gorgeous, and named Piglet, he's about 4&1/2 and until now has been a healthy little fella... didn't even suffer when his brother died last year, didn't pine or anything!

BTW... he's been struggling to swallow, vet said he could have a sore throat, which might be why he's not eating... he seemed to want to as he kept going to his dish, but hasn't eaten any of it... :(

I'll be honest, I've never heard of a vet suggesting a guinea pig is not eating because of a sore throat before. Are you happy your vet is cavy savvy?
I would be after a second opinion and fast if I were you. If you can tell us your location hopefully a member can recommend an experienced guinea pig vet.

Hi All

Unfortunately Piglet died this evening... he went downhill so suddenly, and was so weak today because he wasn't eating (even though i was syringe feeding regularly)... he was fine on Friday when i tucked him in for the night :( it's all been a bit of a shock!

I was happy with the vet's care, she was quite thorough in examining him, and couldn't find any other reason for the infection, she would have examined him further tomorrow when i took him back, under anesthetic, but obviously i don't need to take him now.

:(:(

Oh that's so sad. I so sorry you had to say goodbye to Piglet.
You might like to put a tribute in the Rainbow Bridge section.
Big hugs to you x

Only just read this thread. So sorry to hear about Piglet. (((((hugs)))))

Awwww... I'm so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace, Piglet.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Run free Piglet and find your brother over the bridge.

So sorry Piglet has gone to the rainbow bridge to be with his brother - big hig to you x
