Hi everyone,

I have had a poorly guinea pig now for about a month on and off- I have been to the vets numerous times and have been given different medicine/anitibiotics for Jurghey to take. First of all it was baytril for an infection- which he seemed to pick up but then a few weeks later was back at the vets for gut statis- this time we were given emeprid. He has been on that for the last 10-14 days. Although he seems to be doing "ok"- he still does not seem interested in any food. He will sniff his pellets , put them in his mouth but then spit them back out again. He only weighs 540g compared to his brother (1100g) I am due to see an exotic pet specialist in a few days time to hopefully get to the bottom of what it is, but I was wondering if anyone on here may have any ideas on what could be the matter or seen anything similar in their guinea pigs? He will nibble at his hay but will refuse the syringe food we were given for him. The last few days we have noticed his noises changing- he now sort of hoots instead of squeaks! Not sure of it is part of the ongoing issue or something new!
Thanks in advance😊

Hello,

Sorry to hear your little one is having problems. 540g sounds very tiny indeed!

I'm afraid we can't diagnose on this forum from descriptions, only a vet can diagnose and offer a treatment plan. I'm glad you are managing to get him seen by a specialist.
Ask lots of questions and make sure they are thorough. Make sure he has his teeth checked also (even if he didn't have dental problems initially, a period without eating could result in a dental issue that now needs correcting).

In the mean time, if he is not eating enough you will need to step in with syringe feeding. Make sure you are weighing him daily.

Please do have a read of the excellent guides on here:

My boys and I are sending lots of love and healing vibes for your boy. Let us know how you get on at the vets 🤞

Yes- he used to be the bigger one out of the 2! Who knows what is going on but I already have all my questions written down for the vet!

I always try to syringe feed him but he never takes it. He wont open his mouth and moves his head to the side. Will keep on trying though. Thanks very much
