Hi there

My guinea pig looked all puffed up and poorly this morning so I took her to the vets and the vet said she was a bit bloated and had a high temperature so she gave her an injection to take the temperature down and it was also an anti inflammatory.

My guinea seemed a bit better this afternoon but tonight she is just lying in her cage breathing heavily and doesn't want to move.

Is there anything I can do for her at home? The vets aren't open again until Monday morning.

Thanks

Do you not have emergency vets open where you are? How has her eating and weight been and what did the vet say about the bloating? Were you given any medicines to give her at home?
I’ll tag @VickiA but it sounds really serious.

I’m afraid you need to get your piggy to an emergency vet. Vets do have out of hour cover for emergencies and this certainly sounds like one.

Thanks for your reply.

I rang the emergency vet and they will charge £113 just to look at her. I can't afford this. What can I do?

There is nothing you can do yourself. She needs to see a vet.
Do you have someone who can lend you the money

:agr: Even if she’s brighter now I’d say she needs to be seen. You also need to start weighing her daily at the same time each day. If she isn't maintaining her weight you will have to step in and syringe feed her.

Have you managed to borrow money from someone?

Hi everyone

Thanks for your replies and help 🙂

So I took my guinea pig back to the vets and they examined her. They said they couldn't find anything wrong this time and her temperature was back to normal. Also she has not lost any weight since last time.

However, she has been acting strangely, although she is a bit better than she was, so they have given me some Metacam to give her over the next 4-5 days so hopefully this will do the trick.

Thanks for the help and advice 🙂
