Hi all, I’m new here so not sure how to post properly but here goes.
Our Guinea pig Cookie appears to have a sore eye, anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Many Thanks
Kayleigh

Anyone give me advice how to post picture of Guinea?

Welcome to the forum

To post pictures you need to wait until your registration completes behind the scenes. When it has completed, the words ‘new born pup’ will appear under your avatar. At that point under the message box you will see a button which says ‘attach files’ And you can then add a picture.

However, any eye issues are considered urgent and require a vet check. Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly so UK vets see them as priority. Please do call your vet today for an appointment - you and the vet should aim to have the injury checked within 24 hours of it occurring.

We can’t know for sure that is what you are dealing with (we can’t see it nor can we diagnose anything even if we do have a picture), but a very common injury in piggies is haypoke. To determine this, a vet will put a fluorescent dye in a piggy’s eye to check for ulceration. Should haypoke and ulceration be diagnosed, antibiotic eye drops, lubricant and pain relief are the normal treatment. However, there are obviously other issues which can occur - not every eye issue is a haypoke.

I hope your piggy is ok and let us know how you get on at the vet

Thank you for your reply.

Ah right, that doesn’t look like a haypoke - it looks like it is the skin around the eye but not the eye itself? Is that right?

There is the potential for this to be be a fungal infection such as ringworm.
There are other things it could be, and not all fungal infections are ringworm.
Are they new piggies or have you brought in any new piggies recently?
It’s good you’ve got an appointment as you’re obviously going to need a diagnosis after a hands on check

I’ve added our ringworm guide in below just in case that is the diagnosis.

Yes it looks like it’s just the skin around the eye to me too, the eye itself looks healthy.
We’ve had Cookie about a year now and we lost one all of a sudden but Cream has been with us about 8 months now too so no new additions. A

Thankyou, I’ll have a read.
