New Born Pup
We rescued a Guinea Pig in October. She's coming up to 4 years old and is the love of our house, alongside her sister.
Since day 1 she's been at the vets for a new issue at least 2 times a month.
First issue was she was rescued with a dislodged hip that wasn't treated and is permanently buggered. £50 for the consultation and £50 for x-ray. No treatment and nothing we can do for it.
Then she wouldn't eat. We were told she had to put on muscle. No treatment or advice as you can't force her to walk and her hip hurts her. £50 for the consultation. Asked to come back for another £50 session where she was put on a scale for ten seconds and that was it.
Then she got ringworm. £50 for initial consultation and a vial of 30ml of shampoo for £100. Two "progress" check ups that week (£50 for 30 seconds each). Another 30ml shampoo at about £100 a via, plus 3 "progress" check ups. Then a final check up where a cream was prescribed (£30).
Then she got an abscess £50 consultation, £230 treatment (popping, antibiotics, painkillers).
She has a sister who hasn't caused us any grief. But as you can see it's piling up and she's still on the abscess meds. Now her ringworm is back and we are out of money.
We have tried for insurance but cannot get it as she is always "currently recieving treatment" and the vets do not offer payment plans.
Is it time to give up? We literally can't afford it anymore as she is so sickly. I think a lot of it is because she wasn't properly looked after by her original family.
It's heartbreaking as I'm working overtime just to get the cash for her to go in for consultation.
I guess I'm asking, are there any charities that can help? We really want to keep her healthy and she enjoys a large cage with fresh bedding daily, plenty of veg.
I also don't blame the vets, they need to stay afloat and medicine is expensive. But the constant £50 for a 30 seconds progress appointment does seem ridiculous.
I won't name names, I just need help with the finances. I'm also worried we're doing something wrong, and causing her to be constantly ill. Will this stop? Will she get better? If we can't get insurance, which at the moment we can't, we're going to be crushed.
