he's in the emergency vets right now - his bum has swollen up like a massive balloon - he was actually fine last night, sitting on lap, though he was a little quiet, but this morning his bum looked horrible - had to take him to emergency vets about 30 miles away and they think it's an absess or hernia - not sure why, though he had the chop around 6 weeks ago, so maybe it's something from that i dont know. But anyway just rung the vets and they are operating on him right now - i hope he will be ok - he's the longest piggy i have had - they said it's going to cost around £250 cose it's out of hours - that's a lot of money, but he's my baby and I couldn't have left him.

Take care.

just rung the vets, it was an absess and a very big one they said - he's still recovering and is very sleepy, but need to ring back later to see if we can bring him home. thanks for your replies xx

hope louis is ok, poor little fella, he needs a good cuddle when you next see him!

I am the same, doesnt matter how much money it costs! just their health first!
x>>x>>

Glad he has had the op and hope he is home with you very soon. Give him a kiss and cuddle from me.

Joy xx

I do hope he will be o.k.

Afraid hernia is fairly common in neutered boys, this is why I am against it.

louis is now home - the wound where they have operated looks horrible - he has a tube inside too to help any fluid drain out - i have spilt him away from Lucy for a few days until the tube comes out - this emergency vets costs me £292 in the end - i nearly fainted and that doesn't even include any extra pain killers if he needs it! disgusting what they charge. I have to ring my vets tomorrow as they will have the notes from the emergency vets there and they will advise me when the tube comes out and whether he needs any more pain relief, which i assume is baytril? - I have to admit that money has left me very very short for the month! my other half said to louis tonight, mate you are very lucky as there's not many people would pay that for a piggy, which is probably true - anyway he seems ok, but is looking for lucy - he's had some food and is now resting xx

Glad Louis is okay and wish him a speedy recovery.:)

How on earth can they justify charging that much for a guinea pig though?/ When they are neutered they would have to have anaesthetic and that only costs around £40 for the whole operation doesn't it?/

I am glad he is home with you and doing well. Isn't it extortionate, I really can't see how they can justify that amount of money. We are in the wrong business.

Joy xx

I'm glad he is home and dry! that is so much money its a joke isn't it but with no other option what can you do, you did the right thing! x

Poor Louis! :0 You must have been SO worried! :( I am very happy to hear that he is now home with you and resting. I hope he heals up quickly with no more problems. Give him a gentle cuddle from me....and please DO keep us updated on his progress! xxxxx

Poor Louis, hope he is getting better by the minute.

Not much you can do when you have to take the piggy to emergency. They can charge whatever when because you don't get a chance of "shopping" around for the best price.

Well, hope Louis is recovering well and hope you are recovering from that huge bill for the month, too.

Lot's of cheap meals this month. LOL! But I guess it's worth it. :)

had to take Louis back to the vets this moring - his drain tube which was hanging out of the wound on his bum - I thought great here we go again, more bloody money but he didnt have to have another one put in - I need to bathe him in salt water all week and he's on baytril twice a day - cost me £11. I had to ring work this morning and when I told them of how much he cost me - some people were not expressed and bascially thought I should have had him put down - no way would I!anyway I looked into insuring the piggies, but it worked out around £75 a month for all 11, so now I have set up a bank transfer every month, just in case anything like this happens again - I did get the Chinchilla insured, only £6.50 per month. Thing is cose it was an absess it could end up coming back in time couldn't it?

I think if you did insure him they wouldn't insure him against anything that he has already had so if he got another abscess you would have to pay for it anyway - that's the way it works with dog insurance anyway and would think it was the same with any animal.:)

true, i was mainly thinking of the other piggies who haven't had any problems, but it's too expensive, so would rather save some money up every month myself.

Glad he came through it ok and hope he continues to recover.

I spent well over £500 getting Sunny better and would do it again if I needed to!
