ive got home tonight from work and lily is not acting right, for the last couple of days she has hardly got out of the bed and i watched her and she keeps layin down. i have took her indoors in the indoor cage and shes still laying down, shes eatin ay but not really moving. i dont know if she is hurt? really worried :(

Is Lily the one who may be a lethal? I would get her to a vet sounds like she isn't well. In the meantime can you syringe feed her if she isn't eating as she should. Get some mashed pellets into her or critical care. You can use a handle of a tea spoon if you have no syringe. Wrap her in a towel to help make her feel safe.

I would offer water too and also supplement vit c.

Keep us posted on her. :)

ive tried calling my vets but its emergency only and I'm not really sure if it is what they consider an emergency! i really dont know what to do

Yep it is an emergency as guineas can go down hill so quickly. :)

just got home from the vets she has a lung infection, on antibiotics for 7days and had to have injection antiinflamatries? cnt spell it. she was also confirmed deaf and blind. so fingers crossed she is ok. I'm off to bed now but il let you all know how she is tomorrow. thank you everyone for your advice. x :smitten:

well done on getting her to the vet quickly O0 Lets hope she recovers. I think lethals have illnesses sometimes

Oh thats sad, the poor little love. I hope she feels better soon. So sorry she is both blind and deaf. How are her teeth? When you have time I'd look up about lethals. I'm sure she'll lead a life that is full with lots of love. It takes a special person to take in a special needs animal. :smitten:

so glad you got her to the vets and she has medication to help her O0 as she is a special needs piggy i think she has the perfect piggy mum in you who will care for her and love her and give her the best life possible. hopefully she will learn to use dori as her eyes and ears and her sense of smell will be stronger to be able to smell you and danger etc. sending big hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: here is some information on lethals for you;
Roan or dalmatian guinea pigs have one copy of the "roan gene", technically the roan allele, and one copy of the normal allele of this gene. (One from mom, one from dad.) Whether the pig gets spots or mixed white and colored hairs depends on other genes that aren't important. Each pig passes on half its genes to its children, so each baby has a 50% chance of getting the roan allele from Mom and 50% chance of getting the normal allele from Mom. If Dad is also a roan (or dal), each baby obviously has a 50% chance of getting a roan allele from him and a 50% chance of getting normal.

Now, some pigs can have the gene without showing it, for instance a sow had no white and black hairs mixed together, and the black patches on her head were too large and in the wrong place to be dalmatian spots. However, she gave birth to a lethal (she was pregnant when gotten--another good reason to avoid pet stores!). The enormous amount of white hair she had (due to other genes, which don't cause problems) completely obscured any signs of her having the roan gene. So any white pig, or any pig with large amounts of white could be carrying the gene.

Basically, if both parents are roan (I can't see your picture, so I can't see whether the mother is or not) then each baby has a 1 in 4 chance of getting two roan alleles and being a lethal white, and a 3 in 4 chance of being a perfectly healthy roan or non-roan (normally colored). All lethals that I know of have the following problems:
blindness
one or more missing incisors
complete lack of hair color
Other problems lethals to have include:
deafness
missing eyes
missing incisors
deformed molars
teeth that grow in and fall out randomly
These are all problems that long-lived lethals have...most of them are worse off and die shortly after birth. Nobody knows exactly why some live and some die, although there may be digestive problems involved (a related disorder in rats causes the affected rats to be missing nerves in their large intestines) and the tooth problems have to be caught and managed quickly. I have a lethal, Einstein, who had his first molar trim at 3 weeks of age and had already been syringe-fed for a week at that point. Einstein is now a year and a half old, and I know of two lethals older than him.

If you wind up with a lethal (or more than one), I hope you'll do the right thing and take care of them as long as they live. It's a commitment of time (syringe feeding, vet trips) and money (Oxbow's Critical Care food, tooth trims) that most people who get into breeding without doing research aren't prepared to make.

Here's the thread of Einstein's medical history and vet visits. Even non-GL-members can read it. http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7156

In addition to the deformities that Salana mentions, lethals frequently have internal organ deformities as well, especially GI tracts. This has been confirmed by necropsies. If a lethal has these kinds of internal problems, no matter the care they receive, they may be bound to die a potentially slow and painful death. Yet, you can't know ahead of time if your lethal is one that can be saved and might make it with proper care or vet treatment.

good luck lily :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I'm still very concerned that a pet shop actually sold this pig to you. Did the vet say anything about that? Have you said anything to the pet shop yet?

thank you everyone :) i am calling the pet shop tomorrow as when i bought her i was told any vet treatment for the first 6 weeks would be paid for by them so I'm going to show them the £115 bill. Got to take her back tuesday too to see how shes getting on.

If you get no joy at the pet shop go to trading standards. Also they may say to take her back, do not take her. I've known this before they offer you a replacement. :)

i dont want a replacement lol, she seems better today temp gone dwn and shes eatin and drinking so fingers crossed :)

I know, but the daft fools sometimes offer you one. 98) Already they are in your hearts from day one. :smitten:

I'm sorry Lily is poorly. Hope the treatment works for her and she has many happy years with you xx

am so happy lily is a bit better today sending hugs and healing vibes your way :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and i can totally understand your feelings about lily, you love her and she has wiggled into your heart. hoping lily continues to get better and you both have many happy years together. O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

hello everyone lily is still looking good eating and drinking, but i picked her up earlier and she was covered in what i think is urine where shes not walking about much wheres shes weak, I'm gonna give her a bit of a bath later to clean it up.

It might be worth you buying a vet bed. They are great for poorly piggies or even piggies that like snuggling. They are absorbent so the urine drains through the top layer leaving it dry and your piggie warm. They can also go in a washing machine.

morning all,

where can i buy a vet bed?

Still a bit worried about Lily as she isnt getting up much just hope its due to being weak, shes doing well with drinking from the syringe which is helping me get 100ml of water in her a day as her antibiotics are in the water. she is going back to the vets on tuesday for a check-up so hopefully she is getting better. dori is really missing her and doesnt really want to come out and play so just hoping all goes wel so she can see lily again.

thanks again for all your help and support guys n girlies xx

Did the vet tell you to keep them separate? I realise that Lily has an infection but it may be because she is weaker being a lethal. Surely if Dori was going to catch it she would have caught it by now, she’s possibly had a mild form of the infection and just shaken it off because she is a fit healthy pig.
Pigs can get very depressed if they are on their own. Unless the vet told you that they had to be kept apart could you consider bringing Dori indoors too?

vet told me to seperate them as the antibiotics are in the water, got lily a vet bed today. she seems to not be putting much weight on her back legs I'm still so worried.

is she drinking all the water that has the antibiotics in? if not she wont be getting the full benefit and normally its best to give them straight into the mouth by syringe isnt it?

you can get vetbed from www.thedoginn.com its called pro-fleece on there but its same stuff only cheaper lol ive got 2 big pieces of it and its lovely, cost me about £23 for those i think you can get smaller pieces.

i got mine from pets at home for £10 not that cheap but needed it today. she is drinking some herself but I'm doin the rest by syringe

I've only just seen this. I'm so very very sorry to hear Lily is so poorly. She is so beautiful.

Sending her so much love and healing x

thank you so much just having trouble getting her to drink 100ml of water a day she just doesnt drink that much so i may have to get different antibiotics so i can give them to her str8 rather than in her water.

When Ginger was on baytril I had the same problem so told the vet and he said I could put the amount into a syringe and top it up with water. For example 0.4ml bayrtril, add 0.2 water. I don't if this can be done with all antibiotics though.

I don't think it would be a problem as some guineas drink less than others. How is Lily today?
