Took Daisy to the vets today as some small lumps have appeared in her lower abdomen. It turns out they are mammary tumours and will need to come out so she's having her op on Monday.

But...the vet gave her a good check over and felt ovarian cysts too - they can get really big and could stop her having enough room in her gut for food so she'll have to be spayed at some point too! Poor piglet! She's happy, eating well and doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Daisy's friend Clover was spayed in March (uterine tumour) and is fine now. Let's hope little Daisy gets through all this, poor flower.

I do hope Daisy will be o.k.If you have a good vet I am sure she will be.Have you checked what anesthetic she will use,?.

Most vets still tell owners to starve the gp for 8 hours or more before surgery, ignore this becxause it is not necessary.Gps cannot vomit. Also they are grazers so need to be eating most of the time.A few hours without food can damage the digestive tract.I am sure that the reason a lot of gps do not start eating after surgery is because they have been too long without food and the digestive system has started to close down. You will probably be asked to take Daisy into the surgery early am,but she may not have the op till 11am or so.Let her eat untill about 7.30Am.

As to the ovarian cyst, there is a drug called Chorolon which often works in shrinking cysts.Several of my sows have had this injection and the cysts have shrunk.Sometimes the cyst will come back, but normally only small.

Hysterectomy is very major surgery for a gp and should only be considered if the cysts are so large they are causing problems. They can get quite big without pressing on other organs.

Try to ensure the vet uses Isoflurane or Sevoflurane for the anaesthetic.

Thanks very much for good wishes and helpful suggestions. I'd like to avoid another hysterectomy if possible - Clover came through ok but I know it's a big op.

My vet is really good with small animals. He said not to starve her beforehand and to bring favourite nibbles in with her to tempt her to eat asap after the op.

Good luck Daisy

Hope everything goes ok for her
Anna x

My best wishes to you

Guineas should not be on nil-by-mouth before a GA, as they don't vomit (In case anyone else was unsure).

Thanks for advice and good wishes, everyone. Daisy is still fine, eating well, apparently not aware she has a problem! At least she's going into the op on Monday in a good state of health.

Well it's Monday evening and Daisy is home after the operation. She had both mammary glands removed (plus lumps) and has two rows of stitches, poor little piggy. Since I got her home she's had a leafy carrot top (special yummy invalid food!) plus a bit of hay. I'll give her some Critical Care before bed as well. She's snuggled on her vetbed with Clover and looks as well as can be expected. Lots of TLC (and meds) over the next few days should do the trick, I hope.

Thanks again for all good wishes - much appreciated by me and piglets!

That's great she seems to be ok :) I'm really sorry I can't offer any post op advice as I haven't had that pleasure yet (touch wood) but hope she continues to do well :)

Good to know she is home safe and sound with you. Hope the recovery goes well - plenty of cuddles and kisses.

I hope all goes well for Daisy ... bless her. Sending her cuddles!

Please let us know how she gets on!

All looking good this morning. I put nice soft vetbed in the sleeping part of the cage but when I woke up the patient was asleep on the woodflakes at the other end! She'd left a pile of poop behind her too, so obviously eating ok. I put hay on the floor for her but Daisy decided she'd rather jump up at the hay rack instead. (eek, stitches!) She's not at all keen on Baytril, but loves Critical Care!

Thanks for all your concern, it's great to know piggy people are rooting for her.

Thanks for good wishes for Daisy - she's doing well, eating everything as normal except Supa guinea (dried food) but I'm giving her Critical Care so she's getting all her vitamins etc. I don't think she's got the hang of being a patient, she wants to get out of her cage and run around! I kept her on bed rest yesterday but she's been trotting round the lounge a bit today with Clover. They wheek for grass whenever I open the door!

An update on Daisy...

Well, she's been to the vets today for her 1 week post-op check and he's quite happy with her. She doesn't need any more meds (though I'm going to give her more Avipro for the next few days). Regarding the ovarian cysts, he says they're not too big or causing trouble so for the time being I'm leaving well alone.

Relief!

Excellent news. I have only just caught up with this story as I've been away.

Ohh, such a brave little piggy! Give her some strokes from me. I hope she's recovering well and that the other members of your home are ok and coping well x

It's now 2 weeks since Daisy's op and she's doing fine. Apart from the scars you would never know she's had surgery. She's eating well, loves being out on the grass and tears around the lounge with Clover when they come inside again. Her begging wheek has got louder!

Thanks for all your good wishes x
