Pooping More Than Normal. Why?

Hello. I have 2 guinea pigs, both male, and they are around 2 years old.I got them from a breeder and they are brothers, both long haired Peruvian guinea pigs, But i give them a buzz cut every 2 weeks, followed by a bath, to keep them clean, also so that there hair isn't rubbing along poop and pee. They share the same cage and they have separate water containers and food dishes. They get hay regularly and they get 1 big carrot each a day, with some peppers on occasion. I use litter, not fleece. They normally poop what i thought was a lot. I clean there cage every Monday. The past month that I've been cleaning it I've noticed a HUGE jump in the amount of poop. I cleaned it yesterday (Monday) and everything was covered in poop. the top of there wood houses, everything. When i clean the cage i just scoop the litter into a trash bag an put it in the trash can outside. Normally i can just scoop it in an be done, But now i have to dig my way out of an inch thick layer of poop, before i even get to the litter. I don't know if something is wrong with them, or its just normal, But I've NEVER seen this much poop come out of them.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Guinea pigs are poop machines! As they graze all the time they also poop all the time. This is normal so do not worry. You may have to just clean the cage more often. Mine are on vet bed and I remove poops three times a day as they poop so much.

Carrot should not be fed daily as it is high in vitamin a. This thread will help you find other vegetables to feed.

Have your boys been out on the grass? If they've been eating fresh grass you may need to adjust their veggies as grass counts towards their veg portion for the day. Some other veg can also increase poop production. Piggies really know how to poop!

Guinea pigs do poo an awful lot - providing that they are firm, and otherwise look 'normal', then I wouldn't worry. As Piggyfan has said, they would benefit from a varied diet. Like us, they like a selection of different food each day - the link in the above post will help. I feed 4 different veg on rotation each day.

If you are needing to dig through an inch of poo when you clean them then I would recommend that you clean them out more than once a week. Piggies can get urine scalds on their feet from walking on wet bedding. There is also the potential for infection caused by bacteria in the cage.

Yes they do! Its an Olympic sport for them! And no, my boys don't like the grass. Ive tried putting them out there before but they just stand with there eyes SUPER big. My guinea pig Stihl will sit there with his eyes open huge till he is brought inside. But my guinea pig Shadow will do the same for about a minute then he will start to smell around with his nose in the hair, but wont walk around like i want. I have a big back deck and i can put them on that to run around on, but after i have to hose it off... if you know what i mean.. And i love your profile picture. So cute.

When i clean there cage i empty the hole thing out, because i use bedding, into a trash bag and then i throw that away and wash the cage outside because it has a plastic bottom. So do you think i should start using my pooper scooper i have for them one or twice a day and then still do the clean up at the end of the week? And what vegetables do you recomend? My guinea pig Sthil will eat anything you put in his face, but my guinea pig Shadow is a little on the picky side.
